Villa Arconati, origins and history

Why is our villa known as villa Pusterla Crivelli? In 1838 Cesare Cantù published a novel called 'Margherita Pusterla' which is about tales and intrigues at Milan court in the Visconti's era. The novel deals with the marriage between Margherita Pusterla and Francesco Pusterla. Luchino Visconti, Margherita's cousin, was attracted by her, but she refused him. When Francesco Pusterla discovered what Luchino Viscondi was doing, he started to participate to a conspiration to take Visconti away from the throne. He failed and escaped to Avignone (that was the main location of the Papal' state). When he returned to Italy, he got arrested and Margerita was well up alive because she persisted in refusing Luchino. Actually, there is no proof about Visconti's permanence in this villa.
In the late Middle Ages it was a castle that became a palace that the Carcano's acquired at the end of the XVIth century.
In 1543 the palace passed to the Arconati's, that worked on it and trasformed it into a gracious country residence. The main supporter of those changes was Anna Visconti, that also commissioned other massive works performed on Martino Bassini's project, that was countinued by Luigi Arconati.

The history of Villa Pusterla Crivelli is striclty connected to some important historical facts.
Italy, and so the villa, passed through various dominations types like Visconti's and Sforza's in XIV-XVI centuries; Charles VIII and Louis XII, during the descent to Italy; the Lombardy wars between France and Spain ended with the peace of Cateau-Cambresis in 1559.
Then the Austrian Asburgo's domination after 20 years of war between Spain and Austria.
With the Austrian domination the real estate register was implemented, wanted from Charles VI in 1714, and completed by Mary Terry, who gave it the name.
Since the Carcano's, Arconati's and Crivelli's families, were connected to the French royalty, Napoleon chose the villa instead of the Villa Reale di Monza as a headquarter during the campaign of Italy, until the 1797 May, when he chose to leave Milan.
The Villa Pusterla Crivelli became a psychiatric hospital, but the events still wave together such as, after WWI, people who went crazy came here to get treatments. Another important story is the one of Albino Benito Bernardi, who was the illegitimate son of Benito Mussolini. He had been hospitalized since he was twenty and died after six years in 1942.
Then, after the Basaglia law in 1978, all the psychiatric hospitals had to shut down, and also the Mombello one, which definitely closed in 1999.
