Creating Words

Newspaper Headings

Phonograms

Word Blending

Show a picture of a cat, for example, have the letters ready and a blank card or paper to place each letter on. Slowly say the sound for each letter or phonogram and have the student place the letters in order to spell the word.

Phonics Art

Create a craft that connects to the phonogram of the week: paper plate animals. Have the students come up with things that start with that phonogram and let them be creative.

Make a Book

Start by having a subject, example: a cat. Have each student tell one sentence about the cat, what s/he looks like, what s/he did... write each sentence on the board. When each student has had a turn, read it together as a group and decide if it is finished, does it need anything else? If they think it is done, create an ending to the story as a class. Read it again. When they are satisfied, type up the story, one sentence per page and have the students draw and color a picture to go with their sentence. Bind the book with construction paper covers and yarn. Place it on the bookshelf for them to read.

Word Mapping

Start with a word such as pie (a good starter word). Have a place to tell what it is, a place for opposites, a place to tell what's in it, and a place for examples. Take suggestions from the students.

Scavenger Hunt, Compound Words

Have the students see how many things they can find in the classroom, school and playground that are made up of compound words. Have an older child work with a younger child.

Contractions

Matching: have students match the contraction to the two words that it stands for.

Affixes: Concentration

Write words with suffixes/prefixes on 3x5" cards separating the suffixes/prefixes from the root word. Turn the cards face down on the table and have the students turn over two cards (could even separate the suffixes/prefixes and the root words into two areas) to make a word. If it is a match the student must read the word and tell it's meaning. If it's not a match, the cards must be placed back on the table in their original place.

Completing/Changing Sentences

Two parts. Completing sentences: write complete sentences with choices of words with affixes. Students must select the correct form of the word.

Changing the meaning of the sentence: students can change the meaning of a sentence by adding affixes to as many words as possible.

Oral Picture Description

Show a picture to the students with many simple details. Have them tell you as many details as possible.

PB&J

Have the students give directions for making a PB&J. Do exactly what they say to do. If they say to first spread the peanut butter, spread it on the table (make sure you have paper down). They will more than likely say "NO! On the bread!" Then take a piece of bread and spread it halfheartedly. Encourage them to be as detailed as possible. Encourage them to use the First, Then and Last language.
