It is estimated that 9,000 Filipino and 1,000 U.S. men were starved, beaten, tortured and berated during the Bataan March. After reaching the camp conditions didn't improve thousands of more men died from starvation, disease, and brutality. The Japanese tried to hide the event by telling the newspapers that the prisoners were well treated. The truth about the march and camps came out when escaped prisoners told their story. The Bataan Death March was a significant event in American history, because it started a propaganda fire that encouraged the American military to fight in the Pacific War.
