Metacognitive Thinking Across All Grades

I noticed that all grade levels have a TEK for students to engage in metacognitive skills across the year, gradually going deeper as the year goes on. In my professional opinion, learning about yourself as a reader and your reading habits and thoughts is exactly what our students need to be doing regularly, and they should hear this kind of thinking modeled by their teacher on a daily basis when reading aloud to the class. We feel this TEK is a fundamental skill that should be explicitly taught at the beginning of the year and beyond.

Based on these writing samples, we feel a lot of work needs to be done to prepare students to write like the 3rd and 4th graders are writing in these samples. And- this is just narrative writing! What about expository?
