-Darry's motivation is his brothers. He wants them to have a good life like he did before his parents died. He works so hard for them and cares so deeply for them. "Darry is always pulling muscles; he roofs houses and he's always trying to carry bundles of roofing up the ladder"(16).

-Darry's desire is to go to college. He wants to go college because he was smart and he liked school/sports but he never got the chance to. He also wanted to get a good job so he could support his family. "He had been a real popular guy in school; he was captain of the football team and he had been voted for Boy of the year. But we didn't have the money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won" (16).

-Darry's flaw is that he can't emotionally connect to others that well. He is this way because he had to grow up to fast and take on a parental role at an early age. He also has just had a rough patch in his life since his parents died. "Listen, kiddo, when Darry hollers at you... he don't mean nothin'. He's just got more worries than somebody his age ought to"(17).

-Personality trait- "The Entrepreneur"
It says that one weakness that an "Entrepreneur" has is insensitivity. We can agree with this because he doesn't really connect with Ponyboy and doesn't understand why he feels the way he does in certain situations. Or he doesn't really care how Ponyboy or anyofeels in a situation. It also says that another strength for this personality is being rational and practical. They love knowing knowledge but they don't do it for their own sake, they do it for the bigger picture like how Darry liked school and wanted to go to college to get a good, successful job to support the family. "Darry thought I was just another mouth to feed and somebody to holler at. Darry love me? I thought of those hard, pale eyes. Soda was wrong for once, I thought. Darry doesn't love anyone or anything, except maybe Soda"(18).

Darry is a train. Everyday more weight and passengers are added that hold him back from his destination but he keeps chugging along. It is necessary for him not to give up for he must reach his destination(his dreams). "He had been a real popular guy in school; he was captain of the football team and he had been voted Boy of the Year. But we just didn't have the money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won"(16). He must also stay on route so he can keep his passengers on the right track(his brothers). Even though he derails sometimes and is set on a new route it is his job to get his passengers to their destination.

Ponyboy is the hero, he leaves his community and hides out at a church and while he's there he saves children from a fire which brings honor to him.

Darry is the reluctant hero he is an ordinary person that is thrust to be a parental role to his brothers at a young age and it requires him to rise to heroism.

Dally is the tragic hero he makes many judgement errors that have gotten him into trouble and even jail. "Dally had spent three years on the wild side of New York and had been arrested at the age of ten"(10). These actions then lead to his self destruction and he ends up dying.

Johnny is the sidekick he provides companionship to Ponyboy throughout the whole story and gives advice with life and other things along those lines.

Two-bit Matthews is the trickster because he likes to play tricks and joke around with people. He likes to shoplift for the fun of it even if he doesn't need the stuff he takes. He also like to ease the tension or make people laugh because of his jokes.

Bob is the town bully he is pretty much the leader of the Socs. He maintains his power because of how small their town is. Eventually his choices caught up to him and his choice of beating Johnny to the pulp got him stabbed and killed.

Integral Setting

The integral setting in this book is used to create the main problems in the story. It is used to make the story original and to relate to the setting it took place in to make it realistic. Without the integral setting this story wouldn't make much sense and the problems created because of the environment/area they live in wouldn't be there. "I'm not sure how you spell it, but it's the abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West-side rich kids. It's like the term "greaser," which is used to class all us boys on the East Side.(2)

The conflict of the of the story is between the Socs and the Greasers. It is used in the story to create the story line, the whole story pretty much revolves around the relationship of the different groups and social classes. It is used because everything important that happens in this story happens because of where they live and because of the conflict between the Socs and the Greasers. "Greasers can't walk alone too much or they'll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream 'Greaser!' at them, which doesn't make you feel too hot, if you know what I mean. We get jumped by Socs. I'm not sure how you spell it, but it's an abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West-side rich kids. It's like the term 'greaser', which is used to class all us boys on the East Side"(2).
