The first thing that a person would need to know before they can effectively understand sheet music is what exactly those lines and funky symbols are. Well, the collection of lines is known as a "Staff" and each staff has a precurser symbol that signifies the "Clef". The two types of clef are Bass Clef and Treble Clef. Bass Clef is on the bottom and Treble Clef is on the top.

The first step towards understanding the Staves is naming each line and space. The names of each are shown below. An acronym that can help you remember the Treble Staff is "Every Good Boy Does Fine" and "FACE". The acronym "Every Good Boy Does Fine" helps you to remember the lines while "FACE" helps remember the spaces. The Bass Clef can be remembered with the acronym "Good Boys Do Fine Always" and "ACE-G".

Below are the most common music notes; a whole not, half note, quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note and thirty-second note (Left to right). Other markings included in this image are rests, which we will discuss later.

The stem of the note is the line that points either up or down off the note. The direction of the stem is based on the notes relation to the center line on each staff. If a note is above the center line, the stem points down. If the note is below the center line, the stem would point up. If a series of notes is connected by a beam, the furthest note from the center line is used to decide.

For example, if you see a whole note with a dot next to it, that can be read as the equivalent of a whole note and a half note combined. Below we can see a dotted half and a dotted eighth.
