Police officer pays for shoplifting suspects holiday dinner.

Officer Matt Lima responded to a report of shoplifting Dec. 20 at Stop & Shop, where two women with two young children were accused of putting groceries into bags at a self-checkout kiosk without scanning them.
The women said they had fallen on hard times and were trying to provide a Christmas dinner for the children. Lima says he was reminded of his own children and used his own money to buy $250 in grocery gift cards.

“His actions exemplify what it means to protect and serve the members of our community," Chief George McNeil said on the department's website.

Seaweed-Eating Giant Crabs Could Help Save Florida Coral Reefs

Seaweeds too often are blocking sunlight from reaching the baby corals, while simultaneously releasing chemicals that prevent the corals from reproducing as well as making them more susceptible to disease.
The new study from Florida International University determined that not only can the Caribbean king crab munch the corals free of seaweed faster than all methods involving human hands, but that the increase of coral reproduction spawned a boom in reef fish numbers as well.

She previously had served internships with the Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds and also had worked in Major League Baseball’s corporate office. Smith, a softball player at Dartmouth from 2010 to 2012, also had served as a graduate assistant coach at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland.

The Republic of Palau, where about 18,000 people live, is entirely free from Covid-19 and could become one of the first countries vaccinated against the disease. The first shipment included 2,800 doses of the vaccine, which will be administered in two shots, 28 days apart.

Palau has not recorded a single coronavirus case or virus-related death. Of course, they implement stricter border controls and were locked down in march. They followed effective measures to avoid spreading the virus and they succeeded, that is why I consider it to be good news. Knowing that at least one country achieved this satisfaction that many others did not because not all citizens take care of themselves, is shocking.

Oncologist erases medical debt for nearly 200 of his patients

An Arkansas oncologist decided to give nearly 200 patients a Christmas gift that he hoped would make their lives "a little bit easier": erasing their more than half a million dollars in medical debt.

Dr. Omar Atiq, who founded the Arkansas Cancer Clinic in 1991, sent out a notice to his patients just days before Dec. 25 saying that "the clinic has decided to forego all balances owed to the clinic by its patients,"

The outlet reported that Atiq had closed the clinic in late February after nearly 30 years of providing cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy

Granny prepares tamales for doctors who saved her life

A 73-year-old woman from Mexico who lives in Los Angeles in the United States prepared more than 800 tamales for the medical staff who saved her life.

The Mexican spent 5 days preparing and distributing her tamales to all the medical staff who helped her when she needed it most.

The covid-19 survivor identified as Margarita Montañez was admitted to the hospital in Los Angeles, California, was intubated and, thanks to the doctors and nurses, she made it.

After recovering, she and her daughter prepared the tamaliza as a token of gratitude.
