"There is good wine in it, and one may as well be comfortable as one can. Let us drink tonight if one of us dies."

After the two get crushed by the tree, Ulrich offers his enemy a cantine of wine. This quote symbolizes a reconciliation as they try to make peace with each other by offering alcohol. After years of fighting and hatred, the two bond through this simple offering of wine. This shows that they are willing to put the effort into making peace with each other foreshadowing the future outcome of their friendship.

Right before Ulrich and Georg are about to shoot each other, something far larger happens to them both: "And before the moment of hesitation had given way to action, a deed of Nature's own violence overwhelmed them both. A fierce shriek of the storm had been answered by a splitting crash over their heads, and ere they could leap aside, a mass of falling beech tree had thundered down on them" (Saki 190).

This quote is an example of a symbol from this story, representing how the land dispute between the two families had gotten so severe and nonsensical that Nature itself had to intervene in order to put an end to the madness. The land that they were arguing over decided that enough was enough and struck both sides down with a fatal blow in order to teach them a lesson. Even though Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym do make up after the accident, Nature decides that this is not enough and sends a ravenous pack of wolves to finish the two off.
