While visiting the museum, I realized how destructive we are. Greed, ambition, desire of power can destroy countries and wipe out whole nations. Slavery trade was a profitable business which flourished in the past, and then it was brought to an end. And this is what we usually assume when we think about slavery. Horrible experiences of people who lived in the past. Is it over, though? Are all people allowed to live in freedom nowadays? What about human trafficking and child labour? Are we doing anything to stop it, or are we passive because we assume it's just a thing from the past?
There is a bright conclusion to my dark thoughts. All those who were captured, sold and abused managed to bring their culture to the new land and survived against all odds. Even if they died in shackles and chains, their great-great-grandchildren had a chance to taste freedom. So maybe there is hope for all of humanity.

Day 2 Pointe a Pitre, Memorial Acte
Visiting the museum was such an intense experience. It makes you realize how many people wasted their lives suffering so much and how cruel people can treat other people.Acknowledging and remembering the slave trade makes it imperative for all of us to prevent the modern slave trade which still exists. We do not have any excuse any more. We know about it so we must care and act against it. People have the power to change everything.
The last part of the museum which was about modern slavery, reminded me the lyrics of one of Michael Jackson songs, man in the mirror.
"If you want to make a world a better place , take a look at yourself and make a change"

Stefan

Report etwinning: Tuesday, 8.1.2019

Place: Pointe-à-Pitre (museum, city and restaurant)

It seems to be a wonder that the population of Guadeloupe lives togehter in such a harmony. It was a dark und even shameful feeling to consider all the cruel actions and the violence against the slaves in the history. It is a deep impression as I know that facts and conditions like this still happen all over the world. The visit is helpful to understand the long way of Guadeloupe to find a peaceful life in a multicultural society. All the ethnies of Africa, Karibean and European pass their daylife togehter and they appreciate each other. It could be an good exemple for other regions in our world.

The city of Point-à-Pitre is not very impressive as the condition of a lot of houses is bad. I found a crowded pedestrian precinct with a lot of noisy shops to bay clothes or shoes.

I appreciated a lot the typical french lunch with ingrediens of the créole kitchen. First a salad, than a grilled fresh fish und finally flam au coconut. So brilliant that I needn’t more this day!!!

I am impressed by the Memorial ACTe museum, which is so modern, informative and appealing to my feelings. To go through the area where the slaves are lying in a ship moaning in despair, to see the iron shackles is shocking and reminds me of the fact how cruel people can be if they only think about their profit. It is nearly unbelievable that in spite of all the horror such a wonderful culture as in Guadeloupe can develop. And that gives hope. But the last part of the exhibition shows that slavery is not a problem of the past but also a problem of today. We have all heard about children's work and forced prostitution but to see the numbers of cases makes clear that it is a problem to be dealt with.

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.

8th January 2019, Pointe-a-Pitre

On the second day of the training course we visited the museum ACTe in Pointe-á-Pitre. The thematic context was multiculturalism, grounded in the many ethical groups that make up the people of Guadeloupe.
I have learned how multicultural Guadaloupe is set up. Here I became aware of how the way of the slave trade has gone in the past centuries and that the different regions, especially the Caribbean islands, were determined by the slave trade with Africa. I was emotionally affected by the clear representations of the inhumane conditions under which the slave trade expired. The animations in the museum allowed me to perceive these conditions intensively. The temporal circumstances of the slave trade also affected me:
how far into the 20th century this trade and the non-recognition of human dignity went on.
"Poor humanity"
In the historical context, the continued existence of the slave trade, this time only in different "work areas" and measured in 2014, scared me in these dimensions.
What can I do as a teacher? Educational scientists have confirmed that students learn better when the transfer of expertise generates specific emotions. It is important to use this knowledge to talk about prejudices and empathize with people with different cultural backgrounds.

Memorial ACTe Pointe-a-Pitre
Today has been an insightful day at the Museum as I learnt more about the terrible history of slave trade and slavery. The brochure states that 'the MemorialACTe is well anchored into today's world as it is above all a place for the promotion of a new humanism and understanding among people, nations and cultures'. Togetherness is important! In 2019 change continues to be needed.

It is important that our education gives children knowledge, but more than this we teach children to care and to act. We can't change the world but as individuals we can make changes and have an impact.
