What I know about Racism and how I really feel about it.

Racism is the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities that make some races superior or inferior to others. I believe that Racism is not an appropriate or healthy way of expressing an opinion. It can lead to bullying, harassment, self-harm, riots, arguments, and even death. It is the root of a lot of problems in today's society. I feel like our country and even our world would be a better place if we looked past others' disabilities, race, and opinions. We are all human and no one is better than each other no matter the circumstances.

This link shows statistics about racism in schools and how it affects students ' lives. One in three high school students (31.5%) said that they had ever experienced racism in school. The majority of these students were either African American or Hispanic.

This link goes more in depth into how African American children experience racism before they even start school. Black children’s first encounters with racism can start before they are even in school, and Black teenagers report experiencing an average of five instances of racial discrimination per day. This also means young children around the ages of 2-5 experience racism. That is the same as a toddler being discriminated against because of the color of their skin or their ethnic background.

This link shows how racism can affect teens' bodies and their stress hormone levels. They measured their salivary cortisol five times a day over three days, and found that teens who experienced peer discrimination—racial discrimination from other teens—had unhealthy levels of the so-called stress hormone cortisol circulating in their bodies throughout the day.

After learning more about the different types of Racism and how it can physically affect our bodies, I've concluded that Racism is the root of all evil. It is used by many Americans when it shouldn't. It is used as a joke, to bully, to harm, and to bring down others. Everyone is different, our race shouldn't be the first thing people see. We as a society need to go more in-depth about who we are and not where we come from. Racism has lived in our country for far too long and we should be the generation to kill it off, not carry it on. Our ancestors fought for us so that we could have a better life. Slavery wasn't the start of Racism, but it contributed to it.
