His father was the Diwan (prime minister) of Porbander state. At the age of 13, he was married off to a 14-year-old Kasturbai Markhanji in an arranged marriage, as it was a custom in the religion. 2 years later, the couple’s first child was born but only survived a few days. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Mahatma Gandhi was the leader in India’s movement for independence by challenging the British not with violence and weapons, but with peaceful protests and stirring inspirational speeches. Gandhi shared his vision of civilisation when he said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind.” (Whipps, 2008) When he was just under the age of 19, Gandhi travelled to London to study law at University College London and train as a Barrister. During his time in London, he was exposed to new ideas and many elements of British society and culture. In 1891, he became officially licensed to practice law in court and then moved back to India. In 1893, he moved to South Africa to take a position as a legal consultant for an Indian trading and shipping company. The inequality and discrimination of South Africa’s society was shocking to him and he became committed to anti-colonial politics. In 1947, India won independence from Britain thanks to Gandhi’s peaceful disobedience campaign. They had no choice but to be controlled and commanded by the British. His non-violent method of protesting against the British caused thousands of people to follow him. Also, a man named Nathuram Godse had the same aim to help his fellow Indians however, his ideas of politics and religion was about harnessing power to install fear into the opponents whereas, Gandhi, politics wasn't so much about defeating the British, it was to transform them. Godse didn't like Gandhi’s practice and after the assassination, the youngest Gandhi visited his father’s killer and asked him why he asked him why he killed his father. 
“The reason is purely political and political alone!” (Patel, 2015) he responded with. Because of Gandhi and Godses’ different political ideas, Godse felt that Gandhi may obstruct his work, so he decided to eliminate him. When Gandhi lead the Civil Disobedience Movement, a march to the sea in protest of the British law prohibiting Indian’s from selling or buying salt, a popular part in their diet. (HISTORY.com, 2017) Gandhi broke this law with the purpose of going to prison. Many of his followers copied him and also went to gaol. Many Indians went to prison during this movement, the government was pressured to release them. In 1930, a contract was given to Gandhi stating that if they stop the movement, then they would be released. (Reynafarje, 2017)

Dakota_oniszk https://padlet.com/Dakota_oniszk/gg6xcmdgqvu7/wish/165864935 I thought that I already knew about Gandhi before I started this assignment as my grandpa always talks about him, but within seconds of starting I realised that I was wrong. Gandhi lead many movements that put him in gaol and made enemies, including the whole British government but, he had more followers who supported him and helped him achieve his goal to help India become an independent country, so that they will have more equality and not be given ridiculous laws and curfews. Throughout, I have found Gandhi to be a very inspiring man. He was very unique and had a different opinion than others that lead to India’s independence. Although his idea was the opposite to most, he became popular very quickly and people followed him, even though they were put in gaol for it. He gave the Indian’s a sense of belonging and hope, which is what I admire. Gandhi has changed my world view as I now know there is more than one way to achieve the same goal, but maybe more efficiently and effectively. Even though I am very ‘chill’ when being faced head on with a situation, I still have the potential to become irrational and painful when trying to stick up for what I think is right, so I think I should take a lesson from Gandhi and stay calmer and deal with the situation more peacefully, but in a way where I still make it clear of my intentions and beliefs.
