Charlie Chaplin - The Circus 1928

This clip shows Charlie Chaplin accidentally lock himself inside of a lions cage with a lion in it. He makes humorous attempts to escape through the use of visual comedy there is only one frame with dialogue in the form of a subtitle. In the end the woman which fainted upon seeing him locked inside of the lion cage frees him. The film 'The Circus' is written and directed by Charlie Chaplin himself and it became the 7th highest grossing silent film in cinema history. Seeing as this is a movie that was filmed, a camera was used to produce it. The target audience of this movie is very wide seeing as comedy can be appreciated by everyone. This film (or the clip from it) is quite amusing and it appeals to me because of its quick wit and dated aesthetic.
I feel like the aesthetics could influence my work in the title sequence.

Romantic Comedy: Silent Film

It - 1927

The narrative of this film is about a young girl who works in a shop who falls in love with her wealthy boss.
The film was based on the novella by Elinor Glyn, which had been published in the Cosmopolitan magazine.
The movie is a romantic comedy. Because of this, the movie was most likely targeted at rich, upper class women.
The visual appeal of this work is the overall style of the time. One example of this would be that, for silent films, eyebrows were drawn thinner in order to create more dramatic expressions, which allows for a stronger narrative to be portrayed.
This film could relate to the theme of time as its a romantic comedy, in which the comedic timing is vital in creating a successful film. This could be a concept that could be developed further for this unit.

The Portrait 1915

In this film a man is shown purchasing a painting which unnerves him and causes him sleepless nights as he imagines it moving. Eventually the man in the painting climbs out of it and the movie ends. This movie was created in 1915 in Russia by Ladislas Starevich ( but the story was by Nikolai Gogol) and it is a silent movie with no dialogue at all, not even illustrated dialogue and no music this could be due to the fact it was made in Russia in 1915 when the country was not in a good place financially. This movie is in the horror genre and it is only 8 minutes long so i feel it captures the fear created in a short amount of time. This could help me in my title sequence as there is not much time in a title sequence to really get across a set atmosphere. The target audience of this film is mostly horror enthusiasts.

A Trip to the Moon -1902

This film was created by Georges Melies. The film was one of the first sci-fi films, and one of the most influential films in cinema history.
In the film, the characters travel to the moon and then find aliens. The film had a confusing narrative, as it was a silent film. One of the limits of silent film is that is can be hard to convey a cohesive story due to the lack of sound/dialogue in the film.
The film had many inspirations, such as the novels 'From the Earth to the Moon' and 'Around the Moon'.
The target audience of this movie would be sic-fi fans.
The overall movie is very visually appealing - not only does it have the novelty of using very old effects but the whole movie was hand painted - they painted each frame of the film in order to add colour. It is one of the first instances of colour film.
