I think that the entire town had been brainwashed at the point. Kids are growing in an environment where your parents, teachers, neighbors, and more are lower someone based on their skin color. Therefore, it became "ok" to do the same thing as their "role models" because the didn't know anything else and this caused several African Americans to loose their lives. No one wanted African Americans to compete with a whites because possibly the African American could have come out on top and the white people wouldn't allow that to be an option; there was going to be no dent in a white person's social status.
