Another is when the Gollum challenges him to trivia testing his mental capability even though he technically cheated.
Allies:
- You could say that Bilbos’ allies were the dwarves but they were with him the entire time so a good ally was Beorn who they met in chapter 7. Beorn also considered the “bounty man” was very handy and could turn into a bear.
Enemies:
- The first enemies of Bilbo and the dwarves are the Goblins. Very ugly, nasty, and cruel creatures. The Goblins capture them in the 4th chapter while they were camping out in a cave during a storm.

In addition, the treasure was “where the walls were nearest could dimly be seen coats of mail, helms, and axes, filled with a wealth that could not be guessed (Tolkien 201). Bilbo takes a cup from Smaug’s treasure pile and Smaug's reaction was he was mad/angry and furious that his cup was stolen.

Some of the first allies that Bilbo and the dwarves came to find were the elves and Elrond that lived in the last homely house. “The master of the house was an Elf-friend” (51). The elves here accommodate the dwarfs for “fourteen days at least, and they found it hard to leave”(51). During their stay there Elrond successfully identified the names of the swords that they recovered from the trolls' cave and was able to tell the dwarves that “the setting sun with the last light of Durins’s day will shine upon the keyhole”(53).

One of the enemies that Bilbo and the dwarves come across were the wood-elves that they encountered while they were crossing through Mirkwood. All but Bilbo were captured by the wood-elves.”When the elves bound the dwarves in a long line, one behind the other and counted them, they never found or counted the hobbit.”(170). The dwarves are imprisoned in the elven fortress and Bilbo is forced to think of a way to free them. Bilbo eventually comes up with a plan after several weeks of hiding “After a week or two of this sneaking sort of life” (173) in the fortress and after finding the watergate at the bottommost part of the fortress. He steals the keys and sneaks the dwarves down to the trap doors before storing the dwarves in the barrels and sending them out onto the river.”At last the twelve dwarves were stored”(180).

As Bilbo tries to sneak into his cave to spot the treasure, he wakes Smaug. Smaug, filled with anger and rage, bursts through the top of the mountain and burns everything in his path. The dragon flew to lake-town and began to burn the entire town. When all hope was lost, their captain, Bard, was told by an old thrush from the mountain to use the moonlight to spot Smaug’s missing scale. Using this, Bard used his last black arrow and shot for Smaug’s weakness and hit it. Smaug went down and the entire town cheered for him and wanted to make him king.

“It is almost dark so thats its vastness can only be dimly guessed, but rising from the near side of the rocky floor there is a great glow. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you. If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself.”
-Gandalf is explaining to the dwarves to bring Bilbo along. He insists they take him for his word.

“What did I tell you?” said Gandalf laughing. “Mr. Baggins has more about him than you guess.” He gave Bilbo a queer look from under his bushy eyebrows, as he said this, and the hobbit wondered if he guessed at the part of his tale that he had left out.
-Gandalf knows that Bilbo is hiding something. Gandalf leads Bilbo as a mentor, though which guides Bilbo to being his best self.

The first example of this is in chapter 1.

“And here is our little Bilbo Baggins, the Burglar, the chosen and selected Burglar. So now let’s get on and make some plans.” (21)

A second example is in chapter 8.

“While he was picking up stones, the spider had reached Bombur, and soon he would have been dead. At that moment Bilbo threw. The stone struck the spider plunk on the head, and it dropped senseless off the tree, flop to the ground, with its legs curled up.” (146)

The first example shows how Bilbo has accepted the role of a Burglar on this adventure. The second example shows how he faces his fear of the spiders to save the dwarves.

Casey Connolly
Randy Nguyen

An example of the Ordinary World in The Hobbit is when Bilbo said “And a very fine morning for a pipe of tobacco out of doors, into the bargain. If you have a pipe about you, sit down and have a fill of mine! There’s no hurry, we have all of the day before us!” Bilbo is clearly speaking from a place of comfort and leisure and even invites Gandalf to smoke with him. Another quote is when the author said “To the end of his days Bilbo could never remember how he found himself outside, without a hat, a walking-stick or any money, or anything he usually took when he went out;”(Tolkien). This quote talks about his usual routine and usual state of mind. Things that would be characteristic and ordinary for him .Another quote is “He wished again and again for his nice bright hobbit-hole. Not for the last time” Bilbo wishes for his safety and normal life.

One of the enemies that were in the journey were the Goblins. The goblins captured the company while they were in the Misty Mountains. The goblins took them down deep into the mountains, they treated the company with hatred.“They did not hate the dwarves especially, no more than they hated everybody and everything, and particularly the orderly and prosperous; in some parts wicked dwarves had even made alliances with them. But they had a special grudge against Thorin’s people, because of the war which you have heard mentioned, but which does not come into this tale; and anyway goblins don’t care who they catch, as long as it is done smart and secret, and the prisoners are not able to defend themselves.”(59) The goblins know who the company is, expect for Bilbo but that doesn’t matter, they all hate Thorin and anyone who is with them, and then they kill the goblin king which angers the goblins even more.

This makes the goblins mad with revenge. The company escapes from the goblins but that causes more trouble later the goblins chase the company all the way to Smaug and try to fight them for the treasure under the Lonely Mountain. This is a persistent enemy throughout the story and a constant threat for the company.

"It was a hobbit hole, and it means comfort. ". Blbo came from a well respected that peole admired. "This hobbit was a very was a very well-to-do hobbit., and his name was baggins. The bagginses lived in the neighborhood of the hill for time out of mind." Bilbo race of people also had nothng really special about them. " It was discovered that there was a weak point in his plan." the reason why I choose this quote was because the test was how will he bounce back and fix the mistake he had in which he did he fixed it quick to get the dwarves out.

Allie: I Choose Gandalf because "I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you. If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself." I choose this quote because it shows how Gandalf was sticking his neck out for Bilbo

When in the beginning, Gandalf says, “This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.
