people in different areas of China have different living habits and varied climates, this gives way for different flavours of food. Southerners like light food while northerners are the opposite, enjoying spicy food (Sichuan) or sour food (Shaxi). like in the states, there are many preferences for food depending on where you live. the US has many "americanized" foods that originated in other countries, so i think it is cool that China has such originality in everything they do.

China seems to have incorporated Western standards into their culture, yet has persevered the tradition of their own. I think that it is interesting how Chinese people have accepted Western Medicine, yet they still practice traditional Chinese medicine. Is it a common job to be a T.C.M. doctor? Are these kinds of healthcare jobs as high paying as they are here in America? Also, in terms of living, do Chinese people usually live with their parents until a certain age? Usually people in America live with their parents until they are 18. Is it the same in China? Also, in terms of the life of Chinese people, are there a lot of organized sports in China? I know that ping pong is popular, but that is it. Is there national teams that compete against each other? Do people go to the games- like here in the U.S.? Sports are a big part of our culture and a lot of people like to play them here, I don't know if it is the same in China.

I didn't know there could be so much importance attached to the act of drinking wine. For instance I thought it was cool how when drinking, younger people have to make their glasses lower than their elders'. It shows a sign of respect and I think thats something really important to learn about in another culture.

The variety of Chinese food reminds me of America. We have various food types based on different regions fried chicken from the South and fish from Maine. I found it interesting while reading about the "Grand Four Categories of Chinese Cuisine." While reading about the Sihuyuan architecture, is the layout based on Feng Shui? It seems like it is specific to directions (i.e. north, east).

Chinese cuisine is always strikingly flavorful and colorful. With that said, I have only been able to enjoy the westernized version of these meals and due to the uniqueness of each territory in China, i am unsure that I will ever be able to experience what the other regions have to offer. What is better than wine with your meal? The fact that wine was found to be within the Chinese culture 4000 years ago amazes me due to the fact it is still around today. I also found it very funny that the great poet Li Bai could write so many poems after drinking wine and that the more he drank the better the poem would be.

It is very cool to see that tea is a long standing traditional drink that people still have.

The Chinese culture is so unique and I thoroughly enjoy reading and learning about the different aspects. The main thing that's so noticable with China in the U.S. is certainly, if not the most popular, would be the cuisines. I don't think there's a place in the U.S. that cannot identify with Chinese food. In addition to some good ole eating, the attire is also something that shapes the inimitable identity of Chinese Culture...though, I was shocked about wine. Who would have thought that wine would keep the mind focus. Nice! :-)

When I was reading, I was questioning myself does Korean cuisine also have the different taste for different location? And I think the answer was yes. Because I realize that the jejudo was known for the black pig, samgupsael. And the location busan is known for the sea-food because of the ocean. It was cool how China was pretty similar. And for the tea, the because of the workshop it made me more curious about more Chinese tea.

This chapter was one of my favorites. I enjoyed reading about the Chinese cuisine and all the different types of foods they eat in certain areas. I also thought it was interesting that 1.2 billion people speak the Chinese language and it is the one spoken language that is spoken by the most people. I never knew that many people spoke this language. I also enjoyed reading about the Chinese wine and costumes.

As a pre-health major, learning about the types of medicines that the Chinese have invented and the diseases they discovered was really interesting to read. It was really interesting to see that Bian Que was the first to use observation, auscultation, interrogation, and palpation to discover the diagnosis. I was fascinated that the Shennong's Materia Medica recorded 365 herbs during the Han Dynasty. It's amazing to see how much herbs and other types of medicine the Chinese discovered before anyone else discovered it.

I really enjoy drinking tea for I find it to be relaxing and helpful during times of sickness. I didn't know that China was the 'homeland of tea', I just knew that they were known for their tea, along with other things. I remember learning about 3 types of tea from the Chinese Tea seminar but I didn't know about the Scented, Tuo, and Brick tea. I'd really like to expand my tea palate and try some of those other 3. The brick tea sounds interesting and I'd like to know more about it. Like why and how is it brick shaped? I'm also a drinker of wine as and I wonder if many of the rules of drinking wine still matter today? What kind of drinking games did they play? Do people in China play similar drinking to ones here in the U.S (ex: Never Have I Ever, Kings, etc)?

Food is one of the easiest ways to learn about any given culture, and China just happens to have a rich and diverse history of food and drink. Between the varied and distinct styles of cooking in each province to the ubiquitous tea, China truly embraces the role meals and food play in society. It's even integrated into Festivals and steeped in tradition. It would be nice if US culture had such a strong, unifying symbol of respect and gathering as the Chinese tea ceremony.
