This was a rare feat for women, especially those of color during this time. Her strive not just to become an independent woman, but one who is helping others is what keeps her going every day. With a good sum of the insurance money gone because of Walter's immense error, her hope of going to medical school now seems to be crushed and she doesn't know what she is going to do. Even though her family disapproves of this choice, she knows it will be the best decision for them.
