Stereotypes are the ideas, qualities and expectations that society attributes to women and men; they are symbolic representations of what women and men should be and feel; they are mutually exclusive ideas that by assigning us one or the other reaffirm a model of femininity and another of masculinity.

Stereotypes are often used to justify gender discrimination and can be reinforced by traditional or modern theories, including through laws or institutional practices. A fundamental dichotomy is that while men have been socially assigned to the public space, where political, social and economic decisions are made, women have been assigned to the private space, where they carry out the work of care and upbringing.

Certain characteristics and roles are associated with the stereotype of femininity: maternity, domestic work and care of other people, being affectionate, sensitive, weak, sentimental, intuitive, good, dependent, submissive, adaptable. On the other hand, the masculinity stereotype is associated with the role of provider and being strong, competitive, rational, brave, not very expressive, dominant, independent, violent behaviors are naturalized.

It is used to reflect the existing gap between the sexes regarding the opportunities to access and control economic, social, cultural and political resources.
The differences between men and women have generated gaps and inequalities since they do not have equal access to resources and opportunities.
Its importance lies in quantitatively comparing women and men with similar characteristics, such as age, occupation, income, schooling, economic participation and balance between domestic and paid work, among other indicators that serve to measure equity and gender22, since differences between men and women have generated gaps and inequalities since they do not have equal access to resources and opportunities.
Mexico is in 75th place out of a total of 115 countries that were evaluated in terms of gender equity, according to the World Economic Forum. According to the report, the country is further behind in this matter than nations such as Honduras, Kenya and Malaysia.
