Be mindful when speaking with students, especially in front of others. Show them respect. If a student is acting out or withdrawn emotionally, show them extra attention to see how to help them. Make an effort to say hello and goodbye each day. Lastly, take an interest in learning about themselves, their hobbies, likes, and dislikes.

Consider students perspectives

When teaching empathy and engagement, remember to see it from their perspective. Use characters from stories to express emotions and teach them how to handle emotions with scenarios. Students might be dealing with hardships at home or school and are too shy to come forward.

When the teacher can see from their students' POV they can better help them. If the reason they are not focusing in class is due to not having money for lunches. By seeing it in different perspectives, we can help the behavior issues. Lastly, remember to meet them at the door as they enter. Show up for your students in a simple way, but impactful.

I would like to have classroom team-building games with critical thinking strategies. These games will accomplish many things at once. We can bond with one another, the students are learning skills, and the context can be from literature in the lessons.

Could include:
Have a student share facts about themselves, and the other kids can say, "met too!"
Gather the students into a circle. The Teacher starts with something they haven't done, followed by the next person to them-a student. If they have done it, then they step into the circle. Keep going until everyone is inside the circle area.

Collaborate with your students on a non-academic project. An example, use a large bulletin board to create a positive atmosphere near the classroom. It will serve as a reminder of conversations throughout the day and days ahead.
-use sticky notes and have the kids add things the other kids may "need."
-Puzzle types
-Reading list. Have them check off books they have read and or add books they are reading.

Spend time with the hard students and the quiet students. An idea is having lunch with some students who are not participating in class. Give them some time away from academic stress. Just hang out one on one. Maybe see what there interests are.

Build in lots of one-on-one and small group time. Each child has complex needs, gifts, and interests. Not to mention experiences that have formed their personalities towards school. Does only takes 10-15 mins to give your attention to your students.

-Smile when you greet parents at the school for an open house or out and about if someone recognizes you.

-Take the time to learn the names of your students and their parents. When you meet the parents, let them know that you would love to partner with them on school projects or have them volunteer their time in the classroom.

-Most definitely communicate often. Positive phone calls home or emails. Lead the conversations with good news.

-Language is powerful. If you are finding it difficult communicating with your student's parents, find a translater. Learn to ask open-ended questions to learn as much as you can.

This can lead to less confusion throughout the year.

I would share things such as ways to improve time management or study habits. Articles and videos I have found helpful. To the parents but also the students.

Bi-weekly newsletters are great for sharing school activities or assignments due and fun school events.

Last but not least, having parents share what routines or techniques work for them to help their child get ready for school and studying.
