On the topmost branch a bird the size of a chicken , with scarlet feathers and long legs, was perched precariously." The scarlet ibis is bright and represents doodle in a way of him being happy and bright as he is trying the survive it. Another quote on page 423, from the story "The Scarlet Ibis" says, " ... the bird began to flutter, but the wings were uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down, bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud." Doodle is very weak and it is hard for him to do thinks and here the bird is hurt.
Towards the end of “The Scarlet Ibis” Doodle dies. Page 426, “... so I placed my hand on his forehead and lifted his head. Limply, he fell backward onto the earth. He had been bleeding from his mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red.” This shocking event happening, totally had the brother shocked and at the end, they put Doodle in the coffin and buried him. But the brother has this guilt because he thought of all of the harsh things he made Doodle do and how he treated him. 
The  symbol in the story “ The Scarlet Ibis is the scarlet ibis. The scarlet ibis is related to doodle and how he is so bright and happy when he has little chances to live with his conditions. The bird is also very special and unique. Doodle has a blighted his chances of surviving the condition is very small and the condition is very rare at the time. A scarlet ibis has long legs. In the story doodle can’t walk but doodle’s brother teaches him how to walk, to show their family.
