Colson Whitehead was born in Manhattan, in 1969. He attended Harvard College, where he started working at the Village Voice, reviewing an assortment of entertainment. He wrote 5 novels before the “Under Ground Railorad”, which never took slavery on head on until now. Colson’s reason for this, was his unreadiness to write the novel. He felt that he did not know enough about slavery and the brutal accounts of the travesty and what it truly did to a slave’s mind. It took him 16 years to finally be ready. “The Underground Railroad”, won the Pulitzer’s Prize, as well as being one of New York’s Times Best Sellers.
