The Spanish handed it over to the Americans in the Treaty of Paris (1898). They claimed it as a territory of the U.S. and is still viewed as that. However, when looking at it you don't really associate it with the United States as there are many differences between them. For instance, the difference in language and state of the two is vastly different. Furthermore, the Philippines eventually became recognized as their own independent country after a skirmish with the United States. The United States was able to acquire these territories from the control of the Spanish following their victory in the Spanish-American War. In certain circumstances, to hold certain territorial holdings was debated. McKinley was unsure whether or not to take the Philippines deriving from their victory, but it was the best choice other than leaving it to other imperial-hungry empires.
