It was March 13th, a normal Friday. It was also Immigration Day at school where we dressed up like it was the 1800s and pretended we had just arrived at Ellis Island. I was in a group with Medha Balaji, Santiago Agualimpia, and Hayley Schachter. We were from Nice, France and were Jewish immigrants. At the end of the day, the entire seventh grade met in the auditorium to watch a movie, An American Tail. Towards the end of the movie everyone’s phones went off, and we received an email saying we would have an extended spring break due to coronavirus. My friend Hayley and I knew we were in trouble. We got so annoyed when kids behind us, specifically Aubrey Caprara, started getting loud and excited about it. They were so focused on the fact that we had a two week spring break to even care about the whole virus that would eventually turn into a deadly pandemic. Since it was March 13th, quarantine would start on my birthday, March 16th. You could guess how I felt about that.

During quarantine, I have discovered that dance isn’t just some extracurricular activity I do for college applications. I do it because I love it. I’ve dedicated a lot of my time to dance. This includes doing it both day a and day b electives, having it after school, and practicing at lunch. Dance is more than just a hobby, it’s a passion. Dance is something you work hard for, something you put all of your spare time and effort into. Dance is something that you never want to give up on. When the day of your dance concert arrives, you put everything you have learned about dancing over the years, and show it to all of the people watching you. No matter how exhausted you are on that dance floor, you cannot give up. You need to dance until the very end, until you are the best dancer you can possibly be. In order to be the best dancer you can be, you need to breathe, love, and live dance. And that’s exactly what I intend to do for the rest of my life.

I look up to them in so many different ways. However, they all share something in common: breaking boundaries. My one goal, my one purpose lately has been to break through some kind of boundary, to prove to everyone, but mainly to myself, that I am capable. Ever since coming to American Heritage, my parents and I had been hoping to apply for the academic scholarship. When eighth grade finally rolled around, we did exactly that. I began the application process with the basics: past report cards, recommendation letters, etc. Next came the essay. Next came the “why should you get the scholarship.” Next came the “what do you bring to the table.” Next came the “tell me about you.” One look at the prompt and I froze. Why should I get the scholarship? What do I bring to the table? What is there to tell? This is what enabled my journey in finding myself. I tried and tried and finally one day it happened. Finally I understood who I was and what my purpose was. I wrote the best, most emotionally captivated work I’ve ever written. A while passed before I took the interview and the endless rounds of exams. Days and days went by until a month had passed. People all around me were receiving phone calls that they had gotten the scholarship. People were also receiving emails that they hadn’t. So you could assume what my emotions had been when I received neither. I cried for a bit, then ate ice cream and cried more for I had thought I didn’t get it. I thought I had failed myself. Then weeks passed by again and my mother found an envelope on her desk at work. At dinner that night, she gave it to me and I just burst into tears. I had gotten the scholarship. I had made myself proud.
