Hello! My name is Vince Jiro L. Saco and I have been setting my eyes on Philippine Popular Culture for quite a long time now. I have seen and heard lots of songs, cinemas and TV shows all throughout the years and that made me genuinely more interested towards them. These include music, movies, TV shows, fashion, and social media.. I have always had a particular place in my heart for the dynamic OPM (Original Pilipino Music) scene, which is defined by musicians like IV of Spades, Ben&Ben, Sunkissed Lola, Zack Tabudlo, and so much more. Along with the sometimes cheesy but definitely unique and dynamic which is the world of teleseryes (Filipino soap operas), which have become an essential part of the country's entertainment culture, I also like how Filipino cinema has been gaining international recognition with films like "Heneral Luna" , "On the Job" and "Maria Clara at Ibarra". The distinctive fusion of Western and traditional Filipino fashion, even Korean fashion, continues to influence style trends. Finally, the Philippines' social media presence highlights the humor and inventiveness of the Filipino people, particularly on sites like TikTok and Facebook.

I want to talk about the Korean Wave, or "Hallyu," phenomena in the Philippines for my Pop Culture Padlet feature. The term "Hallyu" describes the widespread appeal of South Korean culture abroad, encompassing K-pop music, Korean dramas, and other forms of entertainment. It has had a huge influence on Philippine pop culture in recent years, turning many Filipino fans into ardent devotees of K-pop artists, Korean skincare brands, and Korean food. Collaborations, fan gatherings, and even the entry of Filipino idol groups into the K-pop industry have all been spurred by this exchange of cultures. Investigating the ways in which Hallyu has impacted and been incorporated into Philippine popular culture would be a fascinating subject.

Personally, I was introduced to Korea in 2020. I started from a Kdrama then slowly transitioned to listening to their music. Transitioning to today, I deeply understood why the "Hallyu" phenomena was such a big deal and still is after introducing myself to the idea. Especially during the time "Squid Game", a korean movie was released. It highly influenced and introduced Korea not only the Philippines even more, but also to the other parts of world .

How is it influencing the country?

It is evident by using the Agenda Setting theory to examine Hallyu's impact on Philippine pop culture that the media is crucial in determining the priorities and perceptions of the general population. The emergence of Hallyu, or Korean culture and media, has changed the topics that Filipinos talk about and consume. In addition to offering alternate forms of entertainment, Korean dramas and K-pop have altered Filipino perceptions of relationships, fashion, and beauty.

As a result of this phenomenon, there is now more interest in South Korean culture and discussion on issues like identity, cultural interchange, and the allure of foreign content. The ability of the media to set agendas has changed how Filipino audiences engage with and perceive popular culture, bridging boundaries and igniting discussions about diversity and global influence. It's evidence of how pop culture in the Philippines today is always changing, adjusting, and adding new aspects from other cultures.
