Hayley Kincain

Two of her character traits are that she is independent and that she is stubborn.

These character traits also mean that Hayley won't trust anyone, or change her opinions about people. For example, in the book, Hayley's stepmother, Trish, comes to live with her and Andy for a little, but even though Trish said that she was there to help her and her dad, Hayley wouldn't change her opinion that Hayley is a mean person, who has an agenda with everything she does. Hayley was stubborn and wouldn't let Trish stay with them or help them. Also, she doesn't rely on her dad to make sure they have food, take her places, etc. It seems like she is used to not having Andy there for helping her too too much, so she is grown to be very independent. So, when she first starts seeing Finn, she doesn't trust or rely on him, and it takes her awhile to trust him.

The setting: Andy's hometown

The setting of this book, Andy's hometown, causes Hayley to become friends with a girl named Gracie, and they help each other throughout the novel. Without Gracie there helping her Hayley wouldn't have courage to do lots of the things she did. Also, since Andy has lots of memories in his hometown, some of his depression might have been caused by bad things that might have happened when he lived there, so coming back could have brought up those bad things again.

Important Event

An important event in the story is when in the beginning novel Gracie promised Finn that Hayley would write an article for the school paper. This event is very important because when Gracie made that promise it forced Hayley and Finn to meet. Finn made a big impact on Hayley's thoughts and decisions in the novel, so them meeting made some of the events happen. Its similar to cause and effect, the cause is Finn and Hayley meeting, and because of that lot's of Hayley's decisions were effected.
