It starts off with a strange conversation between Roderick and the narrator; Roderick believes his house and everything it has control over him and that's the reason why he is the way he is. We also learn that Roderick loves to read and study books that contain characters that are just as unstable as him.

Abruptly we learn of the death of lady Madeline and she is put in one of the many vaults in the house. The narrator notices that Madeline does not look dead but asleep however to the touch she is stone-cold dead. This quote would relate to the theme of a mysterious setting of burring Madeline which was placed in a vault that nobody comes to. It gives off for others to be interested of the ideas could happen in that vault from how it's be unopened. The torches are also half smothered which means there is barely any light in the vault. The narrator is noticing how dark this place can even get from how dull this place shows the sadness in Usher's house relates to the sadness of losing his sister Madeline. This quote finds beauty in the supernatural. Even when lady Madeline is "dead" she still seems alive and full of life. We know Madeline is perceived as being ghostly, so it is ironic how in death she seems the most alive.
