Tom is married to Daisy Buchanan, and the marriage is not a good one. Tom uses his strength and stubborness to control Daisy and those around him. 3. Nick and Gatsby drive to the city for lunch. Gatsby speeds through the valley of ashes and when he enters the city, he gets pulled over for speeding by a policeman. This is the readers first hearing of a rumor of Gatsby murdering someone, and since it is being said as something to giggle about, much thought isn't given to it. He describes how Gatsby reaches towards the light in the darkness as a guiding light, and associates it with Daisy. In chapter four Nick realizes that the green light he saw Gatsby stretching his arms out to is the light on Daisy's dock. 

2. Fitzgerald uses metaphor in desribing the West Egg and East Egg for sections in New York. They represent two different social classes that are seperated by the Valey of Ashes.
