Founded in the early 1930s by Martin Goodman, Marvel Comics was originally called Timely Comics. Its founder was editor of magazines that were successful with histories of western. Visionary, Martin Goodman has expanded his work towards a very promising market. With headquarters established in New York, Goodman held power in the publishing house, accumulating various positions. The first publication would only happen in 1939 through a magazine called Marvel Comics that first showed the public the characters Human Torch and Namor. The publication was a sales success and encouraged the responsible team to launch the second edition the following year, but with the name of Marvel Mystery Comics.

In the 1940s, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon formed the duo of the still Timely Comics that would originate the first patriot hero, Captain America. Its first appearance was in March of 1941 and it circulated almost one million copies. However, just as the war favored sales over hero stories, the end of the conflict significantly dropped this type of script. To stay active, Timely Comics has expanded by the most diverse genres. The 1950s were complicated for Timely Comics and other publishers in the industry. Martin Goodman went on to publish under the name of Atlas and tried to resurrect some heroes of the 1940s, but was unsuccessful. It was thanks to the success that DC Comics got with its stories of superheroes in the late 1950s and early 1960s that Marvel Comics recovered in the genre.

After many decades and the great crisis of the 1990s, Marvel Comics has established itself as the leading comic book publisher in the United States. Currently, the main competitor is D.C. Comics, but this is well below Marvel in number of sales. Marvel Comics has spawned a popular culture myth, Stan Lee. He is no longer officially connected to the company, but has recurrently signed some special editions. In the 21st century, Marvel Comics also created an editorial line for older teens, Marvel Knights, and an adult, MAX. The company has grown substantially with the partnership established with Holywood. Until then, in 2009, Marvel Entertainment was bought by the Walt Disney Company for four billion dollars. The Marvel catalog has about five thousand characters, among which the most famous are Hulk, Spider-Man, Captain America, The Punisher, Daredevil, Thor, Iron Man, Blade, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four and X -Men.

Writer-artist Jim Starlin originally conceived of Thanos of Titan during college psychologyclasses. As Starlin described:
I went to college between doing U.S. military service and getting work in comics, and there was a psych class and I came up with Thanos ... and Drax the Destroyer, but I'm not sure how he fit into it, just anger management probably. So I came up to Marvel and [editor] Roy [Thomas] asked if I wanted to do an issue of Iron Man. I felt that this may be my only chance ever to do a character, not having the confidence that my career was going to last anything longer than a few weeks. So they got jammed into it. Thanos was a much thinner character and Roy suggested beefing him up, so he's beefed up quite a bit from his original sketches ... and later on I liked beefing him up so much that he continued to grow in size.
Starlin has admitted the character's look was influenced by Jack Kirby's Darkseid:
Kirby had done the New Gods, which I thought was terrific. He was over at DC at the time. I came up with some things that were inspired by that. You'd think that Thanos was inspired by Darkseid, but that was not the case when I showed up. In my first Thanos drawings, if he looked like anybody, it was Metron. I had all these different gods and things I wanted to do, which became Thanos and the Titans. Roy took one look at the guy in the Metron-like chair and said: "Beef him up! If you're going to steal one of the New Gods, at least rip off Darkseid, the really good one!"
