As the job market has opened up, women are able to work in their preferred field. They can pursue their careers and have more opportunities to be promoted, especially compared to previous generations. According to Statistics Canada (2022), a woman working full time will make about 90 cents of every dollar made by a man. While this is still a large difference, the wage gap between genders has decreased over the years. This means that women are more able to financial support themselves, thus maintaining their independence. Another reason women avoid marriage is likely due to societal changes. Over the years, there has been a decrease in stigma surrounding partnerships out of wedlock. Because of this, many couples have decided to remain as "common law" partners. A label given to those who have been in a relationship and lived together for at least three years.
