A loooong paper for an independent study on the history of English translations of the Bible in England during the Reformation. It was kind of an info dump--and I made the mistake of trying to present it at an UG research forum (had to stop me because I went over time...), but it introduced me to central theories of merging historical study with literary study that became the center of my thinking from then onward.

I always found benefit in reflection based writing assignments. Since my background is clinical, the opportunity to reflect in writing helped me to critically think through different sessions and patient situations, which deepened my learning. It also helped me to process everything I had seen, done, and learned that day. These types of assignments always felt low stakes so there wasn't a lot of pressure, which I think also helped me.

When I was an undergrad, I took a class on the American Presidency. I wrote a research paper, not more than twenty pages long, discussing the Ethics in Government Act, the Nixon prosecution, and how a version of the Act could be workable despite the criticisms that led to its dissolution. It was important because, while I'd learned about the Separation of Powers in the abstract and through some historical events, putting on my gloves and reaching into its guts helped me understand the difficulty legislators face parsing through it.

I wrote a scientific paper on polar bear populations in a class in undergrad and it was my first time getting to write in a scientific way. It got me more interested in biology and communicating scientific results in a way that is understandable and digestible.

It was a lab report on the ecology of tide pool communities (we looked at how populations change at different tide pool levels)! It introduced me to scientific writing and research and gave me experimental foundations that I have used in other projects and papers. Overall, it helped me enjoy the process of research in a way that I hadn't before.

By training I am an occupational therapy practitioner and I am technically enrolled in the dual degree program. The premise was summarizing what the selected case study was about, how it related back to the course materials (as well as our knowledge beyond that course), and then coming up with our own solutions based on what we learned, in terms of theory and practical application. A great way to synthesize a lot of information.

The most meaningful writing assignment was a math paper I composed for a precal course. I wrote about 4 pages creating some scenario and applying concepts and explaining them. This assignment showed me that writing to learn was something I needed in my learning to understand and work through complex topics and conceots.

The most meaningful and important writing assignment that has helped me the most in my field of biology was a lab report in an ornithology course I took in undergrad. We used data collected from a lab activity to come up with an abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion. He heavily critiqued each section, going through the right way to word things in research writing. This helped because we got a real-world example and really helpful, insightful feedback.

For my minor, I have written papers about the intersections between video game studies and queer studies. This kind of interdisciplinary essay writing had been really inspiring and thought-provoking. These papers were always given to me with the freedom to write about whatever I wanted.

One of the most meaningful writing assignments that helped me enter my discipline should be the State of Purpose (SOP) during my college applications. The SOP helped me really critically think about my like, dislikes, depth, and breadth of the research I enjoy.

I chose to write a comparative paper for a theatre history course on the design practices of various stage design artists, as well as how we see them in contemporary theatre practices. The most meaningful writing assignments I had to complete were in an ecosystem restoration field course. Each week, we had to provide a short synopsis of what we did in class, why we were doing it and reference reputable sources related to the skills we were implementing in the field. These were great because they were almost like little journal entries and it helped me learn how to write concisely but also technically.

The most meaningful writing assignment I did in the past that helped me enter my discipline was the personal statement essay I made to apply for a scholarship. The process of writing and reflecting on what I wanted to study brought me to the kinds of works and teaching I did in the past. I also had to answer the most difficult questions: what kind of work that you would still be passionate to do in the next 10 years? What kind of service or contribution would you like to make to your students and community? It was a meaningful process as I began to look at myself and my study as one part of a bigger picture. I have a voice. I can make a meaningful contribution through my work and my writing. So, that’s what got me started and I am still on fire!

The most meaningful writing assignment I’ve ever completed was a research paper for my research and bibliography class. I have never felt confident writing, I would always worry about whether my ideas came across as intelligent or nonsensical. However, during this class I was exposed to different methods of writing and research and was able to come up with a paper I was proud of. The excitement from the experience helped me continue my path into academia.
