This week we followed the children’s interests that have sparked from previous week. The children have shown interest in building pirate ship so this week we allowed them to paint their own pirate ship. They selected their own colours to paint our pirate ship. We have put the pirate ship in our Role Play Area. The pirate ship became a popular area. Children accessed it and created their own act.
Duc Minh: All say arrrr!
Gia Phu: Fire! Fire! Blow the cannons.
Agathe: I want to be the crocodile.
The Lam: Let’s find the treasure. The treasure is this way.”
Diyara: We need a map and telescope.
Mikhail: The treasure is here. Dig dig dig.

We asked parents if we could keep some of their costumes to add to our role play. The children especially the girls accessed them frequently. We added the pirate hats they made from last week to the area. The boys enjoyed wearing them.
In our Creative Arts Area, they independently accessed the eye patch making activity, some children came back the following day to make another one. The children completed the activity with minimal support.
Minh Dan, Diyara, Mikhail, and Bao Sang needed some support cutting the foam and elastic.
We added a treasure chest, spade, shovel and wheelbarrow. Dong Hyeon, Minh Anh and Bao Sang pretended to dig and find treasure. Dang Lam, Tuan Kiet, and Minh Dan put coins, crystals and gems in the treasure chest. Everyday they put different objects in it. Gia Phu put playdough and said it was “gold”.
In the soft play room, they continued their pirate and crocodile adventure. The children used the cushions as cannons and treasure chest.
The children have memorised the song ‘A Pirate You Shall Be’ and they have requested to sing it more than once.
On Friday, we introduced a new story, ‘Ten Little Pirates’, which will be our focus story next week.

Next week plans based on children’s interests:
Telescope and Treasure map making
Reading a Treasure map
Treasure Hunt
‘10 Little Pirates’ talk for writing
Children and teachers will bring a treasure to school, share with the class and add in our treasure chest.
