As per oxford dictionary, integrate means to "combine one thing with another so that they become whole" (Oxford Dictionary, 2017). Integrated studies is therefore the combination of curriculum subjects taught in one. Integrated studies provides opportunities for students to gain knowledge in more than just the main subject area being taught, and the opportunity to see how ideas/curriculum areas are connected.

Interdisciplinary study provides a purposeful, meaningful platform from which to study (Jones, 2009). Interdisciplinary studies provide a melding of important concepts and characteristics from a range of curriculum areas. It enables students to recognize that most real life situations or issues involve a raft of skills or concepts (Jones, 2009). Working within interdisciplinary studies requires a transfer of knowledge or skills that makes sense to students where different points of views are considered. It builds important 21st century skills of critical thinking, collaboration and communication (Jones, 2009). From primary through to tertiary studies students are advantaged if they can build and develop their own interdisciplinary path. With this control, students are much more likely to be engaged in learning, to inquire and deepen their love of learning (Jones, 2009).

Why is integration more effective than single disciplinary approaches?

Students acquire knowledge as they work in an integrated approach, rather than being provided with knowledge from the teacher (Science Education Resource Centre, 2017). Integration provides students with a break from the intense duration of single disciplinary lessons. Students can access information from different curriculum as their individual needs arise, not as directed by the teacher (Science Education Resource Centre, 2017). Students will be more likely to research more broadly and effectively. A integrated context will allow students to understand how to apply this knowledge in a way that makes more sense to them (Science Education Resource Centre, 2017). Integrated studies is a more engaging way for students to learn, which results in deeper and more meaningful understanding (Science Education Resource Centre, 2017).
