The official Legion site states that The American Legion was charted by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization, made up of World War One veterans (legion.org). They did not have a direct role in the internment camps, however, some individuals from the organization supported the government's decision. Whereas the organization had more of a role in World War Two by supporting the army, promoting national unity, and had more to do with post-war such as advocating for the GI Bill.

The Japanese American Citizens League was founded in 1929 and is the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights organization in the US. Throughout history, the Japanese American Citizens League has advocated issues to benefit the progress of Japanese Americans (jacl.org). When the government started the order of the internment camps the Japanese American Citizens League assisted affected families, engaged in legal defenses, and tried to prevent the forced removal of Japanese Americans for the internment camps. Despite the discrimination the Japanese Americans faced, many volunteered to serve for the U.S. Army and the Japanese American Citizens League played a role in encouraging and supporting their enlistment. Today both organizations' websites state that The American Legion now has two million members making it the largest wartime service organization (legion.org). Along with The Japanese American Citizens League now has an office in Washington DC, along with over one hundred chapters in the US (Cameron Molyneaux washington.edu). The American Legion now supports veterans, communities, and other patriotic causes. They have also advocated for the recognition of the Japanese Americans for the injustices they faced. The Japanese American Citizens League remains advocating for civil rights and justice for the Japanese Americans, they are involved with the community, youth programs, and work for the preservation of the history of the internment camps and the hardships the Japanese Americans faced.Overall both of the organizations played a vital role during the time of war to try and protect their people, stand up for and represent their beliefs some being the same and others being individualized to their specific programs, and they still carry out their duties today.

Furthermore, The American Legion plays a big role in Americanism and values tradition. The Japanese Americans Citizen League was founded in 1929 during World War 2 (densho.org). This organization worked to defend the rights of Japanese Americans and fought for justice to be placed. In addition, The Japanese Americans were discriminated against by the way they look and for their culture (jaclsendiego.org). They were put into internment camps because the Americans thought they were spies and didn't trust them (jaclsendiego.org). Even when times were rough, The Japanese Americans fought for what they thought was right. Although The American Legion and The Japanese American Citizen League have many differences, they also have many similarities. They were both committed to supporting specific communities in the United States. Both, The American Legion and Japanese American Citizen League, focused on advocating for the rights of the veterans of their organization.  They both also engaged in community service activities to support veterans and the veterans families who were affected by World War 2 (legion.org). In conclusion, The American Legion and Japanese American Citizen League have many things in common and have lots of things that are different. They both had a vital role in America's society, both of these organizations fought for that they believed and supported what they thought was right and were committed to their side.
