He expanded the empire to the east and south through his wars of conquest. 

2.  Most importantly, he gave up conquest and determined that he would put an end to his acts of violence. He came to this decision after one severe battle in Kalinga. Instead, he started supporting Buddhist values and ruling with peace.

3.  He highly valued Buddhist values and encouraged people to treat others with kindness, respect their elders, and be moral. He also taught to accept different cultures and live in harmony.

4.  During Ashoka's reign, he managed to spread Buddhism throughout and beyond India. Ashoka even made his son, Mahinda, travel to Ceylon. From there, Mahinda changed Ceylon's king to Buddhism.

5.  To help unify India and spread Buddhist values, Ashoka created edicts which were carved on pillars, rocks, and walls. His edicts encouraged Buddhist values, general welfare, justice, and security.        One reason I think Ashoka is a good leader is because he maintained moderation and good balance between ruling in the form of Buddhist values, and ruling strictly. He taught to be respectful and moral, but also ruled in more harsh ways when he thought was necessary.

       Another reason why I thought that he was a successful ruler was because during his reign, he managed to spread Buddhism throughout much of Asia, which was one of Ashoka's most significant accomplishments. Once he gave up conquest, he deeply supported Buddhist values and spread them throughout his entire empire.

       Lastly, Ashoka was a great leader and hero because of his edicts. His wise edicts greatly impacted his empire and they encouraged Buddhist values, general welfare, justice, and security. This gave his empire a powerful foundation and structure. His edicts were spread throughout India.
