School library budgets have been shrinking and there are fewer opportunities to actually browse books to select them for your library collection, so this is how we can help with boxes of books, delivered free to your school.  It costs about $6.70 to return a box of books to National Library Auckland and that makes it a good value option when the box of books might have nearly $1,000 worth of books inside!
As well as topic requests, extra reading, and specific title requests we also have:
  •  targeted collections of books in world languages
  • books with accessible print formats (large print, dyslexia friendly fonts)
  • books that make great read alouds 
  • and, new to the collection, VOX books – books that read the story aloud. Here’s the link to our website with information about all this, including how to find particular VOX book titles – or else you can just ask for them as part of your usual requests. 

Something else to consider, is our Print Disability Collection 
The Print Disabilities Service caters to adults, young adults and children, who are unable to independently read, hold or turn the pages of a standard book because they:
o    are blind or vision impaired
o    or have physical disabilities which limit their ability to hold or manipulate information in a printed form
o    or have perceptual or other disabilities which limit their ability to follow a line of print or which affect their concentration.

    A shelter for sadness by Anne Booth, illustrated by David Litchfield 
    Sadness has come to live with me and I am building it a shelter. I am building a shelter for my sadness and welcoming it inside. 
     A small boy creates a shelter for his sadness, a safe space where Sadness is welcome, where it can curl up small, or be as big as it can be, where it can be noisy or quiet, or anything in between. The boy can visit the shelter whenever he needs to, every day, sometimes every hour, and the two of them will cry and talk or just sit, saying nothing.
     And the boy knows that one day Sadness may come out of the shelter, and together they will look out at the world, and see how beautiful it is.

    Reading to reduce stress, reading for pleasure, specific books about mindfulness, breathing, managing emotions…

    We have a great range of books about mindfulness, breathing and relaxation, managing emotions and feelings, developing resilience, strategies for mental well being…
    You can request a loan and see which ones might suit your students.  These books give such a range of positive and useful ways to start conversations and ways to describe things that help students – and everyone – look after themselves when things are difficult.

    Let’s start with thinking about the most essential services that you offer through the library? Now, think about how visible and accessible those services are, outside the four walls of the library?
    Two aspects to consider:
    Library accessibility and visibility:
    ·         How available and well used is the library?
    ·         Are there students who you think would benefit from the library who never set foot inside?
    ·         Do you have a dedicated library space?  If not, how are you providing library services to the school?
    ·         Do classes visit the library or do you visit classes?  Is this ad hoc or is there a schedule?
    ·         Would you and/or your school’s management team like the library to be more available, visible, etc to students and staff?
    ·         What happens after school hours? What happens if the library isn’t staffed?

    Continuity of services during emergencies (e.g. Covid-19 restrictions)
    ·         What events might challenge accessibility to or use of the library?  Has this happened to you in the past and how have you overcome it?
    ·         Have you planned (either alone or in collaboration with senior management) what library services are most important and should be continued in emergencies?
    ·         What ideas do you have or have you tried to maintain a library service if students can’t access the physical library or are studying from home?

    One of my favourite creators of stories is someone who goes by the name of Zokoroa (think Tokoroa with a Z) - she has created a wonderful, eclectic range of surprising and entertaining stories - great models to show students.

    It is too much really to go through it all at once, but maybe you could have a “resource highlight of the week” for staff  at your school - by email or at a meeting, and just show them how great these tools and access points are – going beyond Google!  With the focus now on the Aotearoa Histories curriculum, these sorts of resources will be so very relevant.
     If it isn’t possible / you don’t feel comfortable doing a session, even briefly, to all the staff, maybe just choose one department / syndicate / teacher and show them, or else send an email, or ask me to come and we can do a session together at your school 😊
