That would present a danger not only for the one entering but also for those who are already inside"(5) To me, this is symbolic that how the steadfast of Jewish people were to their faith. Often people ask why didn't they just lie about who they were, when there is danger in trying to be someone that you are not whycxether that is lying about your religion or whatever just ignoring your true identity in whatever form. Being your own person is the most important piece of any ones identity

"But I'm not," I said. "I'm fifteen." "Fool. Listen to what I say." Then he asked my father, who answered: "I'm fifty." "No." The man now sounded angry. "Not fifty. You're forty. Do you hear? Eighteen and forty."(30) The man talking to them very well was a large contributor to his survival. Lying about his age was important during the selection because if he told the doctor he was 15 he very well could have been a part of the doctor's experiments. This helped his dad survive too because he made it seem like he was a younger adult. If he would them he was 50 they would have most likely sent him to gas chamber with his other and sister.

They would turn prisoners into guards that would dehumanize people by striping them of their clothes, shaving them bald, making them run until they collapse and beating them. I no longer accepted God's silence. As I swallowed my ration of soup, I turned that act into a symbol of rebellion, of protest against Him"(69). In other words, even though Elie's dad had told him not to fast he decided to go against his religious personality and rebel against Jewish tradition. During the holiday Yom Kippur followers of Judaism fast in honor of God. However, Elie did not feel God was there for him or his people so in protest he did not fast and had no regret. This sticks out to me because he was told to not lose hope but if he is losing faith is he losing hope as well to survive or is he hardening up and doing anything he can to survive
