One reason I asked to be transferred to the Gift position was to give these students what they NEED. I feel the purpose of gifted education is to keep the students learning more and learning beyond the standards that they have mastered...not simply having them show mastery and stop, wait, then move on to the next thing the class is doing. But it's not been easy to implement at some levels. Most of my students are craving opportunities to learn new things. They often share what they do outside of school and it always involves some intense academic interest that you typically don't see from students in general education. They love to jump right in and figure things out on their own. Making connections from their learning to other things is another characteristic I have observed with gifted students.

Gifted students' minds are going a-mile-a-minute, constantly learning, constantly sharing something new they have learned, are learning, or wanting to learn. High achieving students grasp concepts quickly and have a great work ethic. However, to me, it's the intensity of learning that is different. They might enjoy learning new things, but they don't appear to have a deep desire to learn more. They don't independently search out new learning experiences on a regular basis with an intensity to know everything about it.

Give them the opportunities to stretch their learning in ways that interest them. Give them opportunities to collaborate with other gifted learners on activities. Give them the chance to work with peers whose minds work like theirs do. I also feel as though the work should coordinate with the core classes in elementary. It shouldn't be extra work, but assignments they complete for their core classes.

The 2nd graders, typically, are not sure how they feel about being challenged, and some even see it as a punishment. My district's current program schedules gifted students homogenously for their social studies class, which I teach. Additionally, students participate in enrichment seminars in their area of need (math, ELA, etc.). Most of my students are highly motivated to participate in the high interest, challenging curriculum that is offered through the gifted program -especially due to the fact that my district has eliminated honors classes for all content areas with the exception of math. As such, there is a need for content for students that is rigorous and engaging for gifted learners. For me, the kids I work with are excited to learn and are highly inquisitive. Often my gifted learners simply think differently, which gives them greater insights. That being said, those same gifted students are not always the most academically successful due to a host of reasons, none of which have anything to do with intellectual competence.

They do all that is expected of them and do it well. I agree with others that gifted students can be more emotional and harder on themselves, get frustrated when they don't know how to do something right away, and wants to be the best at things. I will say though, that some gifted students are so lazy and don't put forth as much effort as they could because material comes easily for them so they don't try, and with that, don't do as well as they could.

High-achieving students are confident, but may not have the innate background knowledge that gifted students seem to have in spades. In my experience, I also notice that gifted students seem to have sense of intrinsic motivation that my high achieving students do not. Gifted students should be afforded the same opportunities and scaffolding for growth, and that includes content up to 2 years beyond their currently enrolled placement. Students need to be SEEN for who they are, not simply what they know.
