I was mainly inspired by Fiona Robinson's work, "The Journey Sequence", a series of drawings representing journeys in the mind. I was fascinated by the complexity of these drawings, and intrigued by the idea of "the moment a drawing stops being about drawing and starts being about painting". I aimed to represent this through animation.

I was also inspired by Catherine Yass's installation, "High Wire". The last line of her description of the project stuck out to me: "The dream of reaching the sky is also a modernist dream of cities in the air, inspired by a utopian belief in progress". To me, "High Wire" is about pushing our upper limits, not just as individuals, but as a society.

After taking Thanksgiving Break to read "The Art of Walking: A Field Guide", I began brainstorming, focusing on the connections between walking and creating lines with drawings. From there, I started making connections between lines and different modes of transport, communication, etc.

Eventually, I decided the best way to represent my ideas was in the form of a GIF. The art style wouldn't be too serious, just black and white cartoons on paper.

My original storyboard for the GIF showed an additional scene in outer space, but I felt this wasn't necessary in the end (orbiting the earth is a line, but not as straight of a line as the rest represented in my animation).

All the elements I needed to make the GIF in Photoshop fit onto four 8.5"x11" sheets. Felt tip pen and cheap printer paper was the medium I grew up with, and I feel my GIF is a tribute to my childhood drawings.

You may notice that the crowd of protestors at the end of the animation is the only part with color. This was meant to draw attention the problems we face today with inequality and inequity in America.
