EXPLANATION: The broken glass referred to in this passage is the red pickle dish that Zeena’s cat knocked over whenMattie had brought it down to serve dinner to Ethan. Zeena carrying the broken pieces of the pickle dish like a ‘dead body’ shows how much the dish meant to her. Since the dish was a wedding gift from her aunt, she probably sees it as the institution of her and Ethan’s marriage that has also broken into pieces. Therefore, the pickle dish symbolizes Ethan and Zeena’s marriage; and it’s broken nature symbolizes the state of their marriage currently. The ‘dead body’ signifies their lifeless and fruitless marriage most likely.
