Mindset Of A School Counselor:

Every student can learn, and every student can succeed (ASCA, 2019.)

Every student should have access to and opportunity for a high-quality education (ASCA, 2019.)

Every student should graduate from high school prepared for postsecondary opportunities (ASCA, 2019.)

Students have a seperate life away from school and it is not possible to know every aspect of their life.

All students want to learn and achieve their highest potentials even if they do not know how to start.

Students are as much capable of creating a facade as an adult. (To me, this is the same as saying 'don't judge a book by its cover.)

Everyone is a product of their environment. In one way or another a student's environment, inside and out of school, will help mold them into adulthood. People consume information from what surrounds them. It is important to acknowledge this as a factor into their behavior.

Children, specifically, act as sponges and can absorb knowledge and information easily, but this doesn't mean they will fully comprehend information immediately.

Students will experience every emotion, just like an adult. They will not have automatic grasp on these emotions and will require guidance on how to accept and manage them as they age.

References
American School Counselor Association.
Advocating For Students

As a school counselor I plan to advocate for every student I see. It is not required to identify a student's race, sexual orientation, religion or political stand point to do so. The exception being that the student chooses to divulge this information and asks to talk about it. In which case, my personal opinions are irrelevant. Advocating for students means choosing them and their best interests above all else. As a school counselor, it is my duty to provide my students with acceptance and assurance, to guide them towards making the best decisions for themselves, to be a source of support and strength they may not already have and to act as a mentor and not as a dictator over the decisions they make.

Elementary students can be easily influenced, especially by a person of authority, however, my purpose is not to persuade students to think like I do. My purpose is to help students expose their own thoughts and ideas in the hopes that they will grow as individuals to become self sufficient, confident adults. To do so, I plan to implement the aformentioned mindset beliefs.
