A strong family structure matters

It is vital for the well-being of young people to feel that their parents truly care about them. This is shown through their everyday words and actions.

According to research from the University of Cincinnati, "Their findings showed that children between the ages of 12 and 17 are significantly more likely to contemplate, plan and attempt suicide when their parents do not engage in certain behaviors that demonstrate to their children that they care about them" (2). This ties to Romeo and Juliet because they were part of this statistic with the age range. They felt their parents never really understood them or who they may "want" to love and marry. The parents advanced their own wishes at the sake of their own children. This created further barriers between the parents and the teens. In the end, these teenagers committed suicide, and this could have been prevented if the parents tried harder to be caring, understanding, and communicative parents. This relates to today because instead of families verbally communicating and doing meaningful family activities, their time is spent working, socializing on technology, or doing their own thing. This creates further teen isolation, and for vulnerable, at-risk teens, this can add to suicidal factors.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/12/171205091558.htm

DIRECTIONS--Take note of the structure in each written box:

Following these in order:

You will need to do the following for EACH research article you include (you are required to utilize 2 credible sources):

*Topic sentence (set up the point's key idea)

*Research that you cite--author and page number. Most articles will not give page numbers, so you need to type CTRL P on your keyboard so it puts it in the print screen that has it set up as a PDF automatically on your Chromebook. You will be able to see which page the quote you are using is on by doing this; a PDF provides reliable page numbers required for citing.

Example: According to research from Jones, "Teens may be lacking parental support and need mentors in their lives, such as teachers, coaches, and youth group leaders to bridge this gap" (22). Sometimes you don't have an author's last name, but a group entity behind the research as the author instead. For example: The National Institute of Health recommends that "parents have daily check-ins with their child about what is going on in their lives to better support their mental health" ( 14).

*Tie it to R and J (use your writer's voice and push your thinking to link this together so it's relevant)

*Tie it to society today (show how this is an issue that is timeless because it occurs across history)

*Use the "Link" button to link the website

How many citations and connections should you aim for?

A Level 4 project will in-depth and w/ deeper thinking make 3 citations from the research article and 3 connections back to the play and 3 connections back to today.

A Level 3 project will make 2 citations followed w/ 2 solid connections to the play and 2 to today.
