1. Lea's advantage first of all is her golden voice. On her time, her angelic voice is second to none. The face that Ms. Saigon is a musical play no wonder she got selected. Next is her innocent aura that holds a lot of power and emotion. The way she convey the lyrics perfectly gives justice to her role. 

2. I am pretty sure that the production thought of it many times before they finally chosen their actors. They won't just select the "so-so" type because they have to purely give justice to the whole play. Filipinos are known for being talented. We can do a lot of things especially in the aspect of singing, acting and even dancing. Upon watchng the play, I am convinced on how talented our fellow were, no wonder they got most of the leading roles.

3. I believe it's a Yes. Original casts gave so much impact towards people and productions around the globe. 1. The kind of voice Lea have is her advantage why she got the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Her voice is one of a kind and you can really feel the emotions she wants to convey through singing. It is hard to act and express emotions through singing, but Lea did it like it’s the easiest thing to do. Also, her facial expressions are on point and we can really feel satisfied with her acting and singing. Lastly, her innocent appearance, I think, is one also of her advantages why she got this role.

2. Based on their performance, we can clearly see how talented Filipinos are in terms of acting and singing. Even though some just had a short time of appearance, we can see how much they gave their best with their performance and it also clear that their roles, main or just supporting, are well internalized. I am sure that the producers of this play know very well how talented Filipinos are that’s why most of the lead characters of it are Filipinos. 

3. Yes, the casts brought the Philippines in theater scene around the world. In fact, according to my research, Miss Saigon has been performed in 25 countries, translated into 12 different languages and won over 30 major theater awards. With that given facts, we can see the impact of this theater play in the world and made a way to know Philippine theater and Lea Salonga around the world.

- My opinion in this case is that Philippines are known as good in English. Maybe the reason is it is important to deliver well the message of the story and that would be effective if Filipinos will perform the Miss Saigon. It also includes singing and if Viatnamese will perform it will be a tongue twister to them.

- Yes because we have Miss Lea Salonga she lived here in the Philippines. Lea Salonga, who originated the role of Kim won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical and Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical in 1989 and 1991. In addition to the Tony, she has won the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards, in the field of musical theatre. She was also the first Asian to play Eponine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway and returned to the beloved show as Fantine in the 2006 revival. Many fans of all ages recognize Lea as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan for Mulan and Mulan II.   I think Lea Salongga's advatage in order to get the role of Kim in Miss Saigon for it's international performance is that, Ms. Lea is Phenomenal, trained, talented and just got what it takes to play that big role. Phenomenal because what is she ?, She is a national tressure of the Philippines whrn it comes to Music industry, judging from her performance in Mulan, she is just great, and the reputation is over the top recognized by the whole world.  Trained and talented because hello?, her voice is like so, so great you could listen to it for hours trained maybe because of her local theater backgrounds and the experiences she had in and out of the country, having this kind of things build up her requirements to say that she is fitted to this kind of theater play, also considering that she is asian which the character was, like duh done, considered, finished.

 I think most of the lead roles in Miss Saigon original Cast are Filipinos, why ? it is because judging from the story itself, it is about asian culture and stuffs, Also considering that we Filipinos almost looks the same as the vietnamese which is a great factor because lead roles are almost all are from vietnam or whatever they are but asian. And lastly because Filipino can speak English fluently, which is great because the theater play travels across the country not only in Asia, And Filipinos are super duper talented and great when it comes to the talks of theater plays, it comes natural to us to sing and act because we are thought to do so, and plus the factor that we Filipinos are flexible and nice to work with I guess so.

1. Miss Saigon is a tragic love story of a 17 yr old Vietnamese girl and an American Sergeant during the Vietnamese War. During the 1980's,  the producers struggled to search for the perfect young asian singer who can sing, act and speak english fluently. Not all Asian singers know how to speak English and the Asians, especially the Vietnamese, were not fond of the story so they have to search for an asian who resembles a Vietnam look with talent. That is Lea Salonga's advantage because she has such amazing voice and incredible talent in a young age, the perfect young Vietnamese girl that fit the role of Kim and lastly, since the Philippines were invaded by the Americans in the past, Filipinos that time were already fluent in English and know the American Culture. That is why Lea Salonga has alot of advantages during that time and got the role of Kim in Miss Saigon

Ive watched Miss Saigon since I was young and I made some friends with the Vietnamese people online and I asked them before, what can they say about Miss Saigon since it is related somehow to their culture. Majority of their answers is saying they did not like the story at all. Its somehow discriminating and stereotyping their culture.  That is why in that time, many Asians were not liking the story of Miss Saigon so the production were very limited in choosing Asian characters. That is why there were a lot of Filipino casts because they were the only Asians the production can have and the culture of the Philippines became diverse because of the past colonization of the Spanish, American and Japanese. Filipinos that time were open minded on the story and already talented in theatre because they've been using theater a lot to advocate and promote movement towards their freedom. Moreover, Lea Salonga's success has open the gates to the Filipinos for an opportunity to reach international Theatre that is why many Filipinos auditioned and aspire Miss Saigon in hopes of becoming a success like Lea Salonga.

3. Yes I agree that the original cast brought the Philippines in International Theaters. After the world saw the amazing talents of the Filipinos in Miss Saigon, the theatre scene around the world open the gates for the Filipinos to cast them and share their talents into their own production. Just like Disney when they chose Salonga to sing Jasmine and Mulan and even other famous theater production like Les Miserables choosing her to cast as either Eponine or Fantine.The success of Miss Saigon made the Philippines marked as one of the talented Asian artists in which it made our Philippine culture reach Global Phenomenon and became well known now in the field of Theatre worldwide and even marked Lea Salonga as the Iconic Philippine Artist in the field of Theatre because of her success that brought the Philippines in the Theater map.

Answer: What I observed and embedded in my mind when I hear someone say Lea Salonga, all I could say is a Living Legend in the aspects of Broadway and theatre play. Lea Salonga's edge during was her honed voice that were a perfect fit in a stage play, like her role in Annie, we can imply that at a young age Lea Salonga was taught exceptionally in the art of stage play. Also back then and as of now, Lea Salonga's innocent and demure features can be seen. That's why before authors and directors of a play loves her incomparable talent and grace.

Answer: Lea Salonga's advantage of being the main character of the play Miss Saigon is that Salonga's talent is very powerful and is one of a kind. In 1989 Salonga was selected to play Kim in the debut production of the musical Miss Saigon in London. Unable to find a strong enough East Asian actress/singer in the United Kingdom, the producers scoured many countries looking for the lead and Lea being fluent in speaking and singing in English. Lea has been the Philippines best child performer during her younger years , that I think was Lea's advantage getting the role of Kim in Miss Saigon.

I have three reason why Lea is perfectly fit to performed Kim in Miss Saigon; an innate talent to perform audaciously in front of someone; an incredible control and a strong vibrato – her voice is powerful in singing low notes and beautiful on the higher notes, and she can glides up and down without an ease; lastly, an angelic presence that creates a stunning mood and environment.

a)     TALENT – As early age as 7 yr. old, she made her professional debut in a musical film The King and I, she played the title role in Annie in 1980. At the age of 11, she recorded her first album Small Voice, which was certified gold in the Philippines. After she turned 13, she had several television projects through GMA Radio Television arts where she worked as a child actress. As young performer, she received a Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences FAMAS award nomination for best child actress and three Aliw Awards. Lea have an exceptional talent – performing arts and theater that leads her to success, on early age.

b)     LOOKS – The appearance of an 18 yr. old Lea Salonga is very appealing. It captivates the audience through his angelic presence. Her modest and innocent body language/movements contradict (oxymoron) to her role (as a whore), which creates a tasteful-sense of ambiguity.

c)      VOICE – Lea Salonga is very good at singing. She moves naturally and appropriately to enhance her delivery. She has a perfect vocal quality, dynamics, diction and intonation. Her voice is powerful in singing low notes and beautiful on the higher notes, and she can glide up and down without an ease. She always hit the right notes with correct intonation at the same time a modulate volume of voice.

With Lea Salonga’s traits and abilities, I can say, no one is fit in the role of Kim in Miss Saigon – but only Lea Salonga herself. (or Morissette Amon, I guess?)

According to miss Saigon’s director and producer, Bobby Garcia together with the Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group, in order to join and be part of Miss Saigon qualifications and requirements are: 

  • Applicants must be 16 to 40 years old with strong singing voices (all vocal ranges).
  • Proficient in the English language.

Technically speaking, Filipinos are QUALIFIED with the given requirements for I have 2 major reasons.

a)     FILIPINOS ARE SKILLFUL. Filipinos can act, dramatize, sing, dance, and mostly to communicate well – using English language. Filipinos are very into dramas and it is very evident to our daily teleseryes available to our t.v. channels. You can extrapolate that we Filipinos, finds an enjoyment and appreciation in drama. Sometimes we lambaste more (criticize harshly) our actors compared to our government officials. (Do you remember when Filipinos are being meticulous and cautious  for the next Darna – expressing their “pambato”, and disregarding plunder cases of Revilla and allowing him to run for the senate elections. In a nutshell, drama and acting in the Philippines have high standards. Moving on, when it comes to singing, Filipinos are very good on it. It is noticeable way back in Philippine History, indigenous tribes used to sing and dance to do a ritual; they also sing and dance as an offer to their bathala. Modern days, most of the Filipino families enjoys karaoke whenever there’s an occasion or celebration. In conclusion, through these ideas, Philippine culture and traditions serves as an instrument to produce quality and competitive Filipino performers.

b)     FILIPINOS ARE ENGLISH LITERATE. The Philippines is recognized globally as one of the largest English-speaking nations with majority of its population having at least some degree of fluency in the language. English has always been one of the official languages of the Philippines and is spoken by more than 14 million Filipinos. It is the language of commerce and law, as well as the primary medium of instruction in education. Filipinos also hailed as for having the sexiest accent in Asia. With these global competitive skills and proficiency in the English language, it is one of the country’s strengths that has helped drive the economy and even made the Philippines the top voice outsourcing destination in the world.

Philippines for having the most leading roles in Miss Saigon is not questionable at all, with Filipinos’ performance and communication skills, are best qualified on the given requirements to be part of Miss Saigon.

Definitely YES! Through the remarkable performance of Miss Saigon, theater scene had been more recognized throughout the world. It opens an opportunity – especially to Filipinos, to showcase their talents. After its success, many international theaters and director lenses Filipino actors to be part of the cast. Lea Salonga became more famous, she also performed different stages and movie films. Manifold centuries begun, many Filipinos became part of globally plays, movies are transpired to Philippine Wonders that creates tourism and fame. 1. According to an article I've read Lea Salonga was truly a gem in the field of theater, she was considered one of the best ever since she was young. She said that the role of "Miss Saigon" is something that people would dream of, I think what made her be a phenomenal star is her full discipline and dedication towards the theater arts, she was passionated for the role as she thinks that it was everybody's dream so she had to do her fullest extent to show the character of Kim. Lea Salong is a career driven person she spend most of her times practicing the arts of theater and creating a flawless performances and good portrayal of characters in the story, she said she does not regret not having a carefree life during childhood as she was focused from what she was doing the entire time and her achievements and experience when she was young gives her the advantage to be driven to her career. 

2. I think the Filipino actors had performed their act in a superb way, they all have the talent in terms of dancing, singing and acting they are not just good in one aspect but have the mastery to three basic things that an actor in a theater play should compose of. Another is that Lea Salonga and her understudy Monique Wilson had a fantastic range of vocal quality that perfectly fits for the musical part of the film not only that I believe the rest of the Filipino leads where choses not pnly because of their great talent but their ability to speak and converse through the language of English and sincr Filipinos is one of the country who are able to speak in English in a proper diction. 

3. Yes. Becuase of this performance we had showcased the true talent and potential of the Filipinos in the field of theatrical arts. This performance was a bridge to many opportunities for many aspiring Filipino actors to be part of the legendary plays, it is truely magnificent to think that the 1st ever Kim of Miss Saigon, Lea Salonga was recoginze throughout the world by this it reflects the great essence of Filipino pride and be known as home of the great actors and actresses.  ANSWER: It's not just because of her magnificent singing voice but also Lea Salonga was molded to be a performer. Performing on the stage is within her character so it is not impossible for her to get the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Before getting that role, she harnessed her skills in acting and singing here in the Philippines, in which she became a television performer, remember she became part of German Moreno's show and she also had a musical show called Love, Lea. Moreover, she became a recording artist which is normal as she has a good voice and she also entered a musical theatre. Therefrom, she is really competent to be the Kim of Miss Saigon because she was trained and shaped to be excellent. Her experiences became her foundation so she got it and even won several international awards.

ANSWER: Most of us entered international competitions in different field and managed to be the winner of such competition especially in the field of sports and music. Our love for music is unchangeable. Most importantly, it is Filipinos who's always pioneer in taking ventures regardless how difficult it is.

ANSWER: Definitely yes! First and foremost, the medium of communication being used was English which gives no limitation in regards with the audience. Another point, performance of the actors are excellently executed which gives me the impression that they are really born with an innate talents, they performed proffesionally. For an instance, there was an obscene part of the performance in which the female actors wore a bikini. They don't mind and they are not distracted by it, which prove that they really have the professional mindset. I think, Lea's advantage for the role of Kim was because back then she was young, she was gifted with a good voice, she was fluent in English and she's Asian. Kim in Miss Saigon, is a young Vietnamese lady, which is best suit for Lea Salonga being an Asian, who has good looks, has a wide range of voice, and should be fluent in English because it was also a prominent language in Philippines.

1. Let’s all face it; her voice was one of the clearest voice you will ever heard and her enunciation was excellent too. Her ability to deliver each song with all its emotional obligation is one of the advantage of Lea had. Her transitions to all those low and high notes was incredibly the smoothest. Her acting especially singing prowess clearly and pleasant to everyone’s ear and not just her voice but also the message has its clarity. Her presence in stage is warm and inviting. As she put her heart in everything that she does and as she put herself to the character she’s portraying is mainly the reason why she is called a masterclass in professionalism.  Plus, during in an interview, she can learn a song within a short span of time. She’d able to memorize and learn new song in just 10-15 minutes. Clearly, the mainly reason why she standout out of all Kim in Miss Saigon is because of her exceptional talent, that at the young age, she perfectly executed and set the bar too high to her portrayal as Kim in Miss Saigon International Performance.

2. As I’ve done my research, I found out that Mr. Rivera, whose career is producing and co-hosting the Filipino/Australian comedy and variety television programme strongly believes, “growing up around music in the Philippines is the reason behind the success of Filipinos on the International Theatre Stage. And that is the main reason why I think most of the lead roles in Miss Saigon original cast are Filipinos, is it primarily had to do with the Filipino culture itself, which is music is implant in our traditions and culture. Filipinos used to sing in front of many other and that is culturally accepted, also whenever there is a celebration, singing is still involved and never excluded. And growing up with those, will help and continue to be a Pinoy Pride and will be on Broadway stages in the future.

- Lea Salonga is renown across the world for her powerful voice and perfect pitch. She has incredible control and a strong vibrato. Another thing that I noticed is that she is good in speaking and pronoucing english words. It helped a lot because one of the hardest thing to do while singing is to say the word perfectly. Even though she is an Asian and it is an disadvantaged on her side, she showed how much talent she have.

- I think that back then, most Asians countries don’t have many actors that speaks English well. Out of those actors, they also need to sing well, fit the role well, Be in the right age group and have the right look. That probably means not many choices available. I believe that the official language in Philippine are Tagalog and English, so it’s more likely to find someone that would fit the role there.
Lea Salonga is also such a wonderful performer with such a lovely voice.

I think yes, because it is a sensational play that the world knows and given that the performers or lead characters are Filipinos, it means that we are capable of performing well in theater. My last idea is that we are mistaken as vietnamiese so that's an impact to the play. What I mentioned are just my opinions but could be a factor too. Of course, there's an addition for the roles so they were not just picked, they were chosen. That's a great way to showcase the talent of every Filipinos.

    She had everything the London West End looked for in a main character. Out of a thousand who audition, she was first.

    But before explaining furthermore why she had the advantage, let's take a look at the basic requirements first to get the role of Kim in Miss Saigon:
    -Age must be 16 to 40 years old.
    -Has strong singing voice (mezzo soprano) and vocal range must be E below middle C to D above top C.
    -Proficient in the English language
    -Capable of good movement/dance

    "She is a Vietnamese girl who is just about to turn eighteen. Kim is too innocent and vulnerable as she finds herself in the middle of a war. Applicants for this role must have a strong voice which should be able to touch up to E, and fall low to G."-casting note for Kim

    All of these requirements, Lea had. but it was the same for other applicants as well. They also possess the same qualities but what set Lea apart from others, was that Lea was extraordinarily gifted. Even at the age of seventeen she was already poised and professional.     In the original 1989 West End casted Filipinos like Lea Salonga, JonJon Briones, Isay Alvarez, Pinky Amador got primary roles. Miguel Diaz, Jenine Desiderio, (Tam, Kim's child was also a Fil-Am), Robert Sena, Victor Laurel and more. That's quite a number, considering that it was the first international performance of Miss Saigon.

    It's not a secret that Filipinos are really talented. We can sing, dance and act simultaneously. Also, with English as our second language, we speak the language well and clear. There would be no problem in communicating with the American production team. Plus, we can easily adapt to any culture.  Broadway musicals are performed in different places/countries. Filipinos can easily fit in a society because we are very welcoming and open people.

    That's a big YES for me, affirmative. In most cases, a person's success is attributed to their race. When you go to other places, you bring with you the name of your country. By starring in an American production and winning awards, people have come to know that Filipinos are actually good performers and easy to work with. Later on, these would give more chance for Pinoys to be part of Broadway. Today, there have been more than 10 Filipinas who got the role of Kim in Miss Saigon in broadway. It's similar to when people buy products. People trust brands because their products are proven and tested. I found out that she didn’t even take seriously her voice lessons not until the audition for Miss Saigon. As I watched the performance, I have carefully observed that she handles note leaps accurately when hitting high notes. The overall sound of her voice gradually became a good factor to encompass and portray her roles very well. She is an epitome of pure talent, showcasing how majestic her voice was as she captures the ears and hearts of the people around the world. She's been chosen to play the role of Kim in Miss Saigon because of total package of her fitted on it.

Her vocal tendencies are by far pleasant and incredible to extent that our ears are like being grace with some sort of soothing and pacifying peace and it has been proved countless times through her talent showcases. Visual wise, young Lea Salonga has this extremely loud attractive vibe which can magnet numbers of eyes; I think you already know what I mean by that.
