THE QUEENS NIGHT MARKET IS BACK

Lovers of ethnic foods, rejoice: New York's renowned Queens Night Market is officially coming back on June 19, running every Saturday through October 30. As usual, vendors of all sorts will take over Flushing Meadows Corona Park, serving everything from Indian tandoori kebabs to Bengali fuska, Hong Kongese soy sauce noodles and Puerto Rican papas rellenos.

There will still be a $5-$6 price cap on food orders, to make sure you get to eat all that's available without breaking your wallet, plus beer and wine on offer for purchase. In terms of music, you can expect live gigs to capture your attention as well.


ROOFTOP FILMS IS BACK
Following hot on the heels of the return announcements of fellow beloved NYC summer traditions like Celebrate Brooklyn and SummerStage, Rooftop Films announced this week that they’d be returning for a full season of outdoor screenings beginning next week. (In fact, it’s the 25th anniversary season of the festival!)

Rooftop Films is back for the summer! The non-profit series is partnering with SundanceTV on this summer’s programming and the impressive line-up includes the New York premiere of Janicza Bravo’s Zola in Fort Greene Park, the world premiere of ESPN’s Once Upon a Time in Queens which follow the championship run of the 1986 Mets and the New York premieres of a number of eagerly anticipated documentaries like Joshua Rofé’s Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal and Greed, and Sally Aitken’s Playing with Sharks.

SUMMER STAGE (NOW THROUGH OCTOBER)
SummerStage in Central Park has been a sure bet for great live music in a picturesque alfresco setting—for free. Though it started (and still takes place) in the park’s Rumsey Playfield, happenings now occur across the five boroughs in more than 15 parks from May through October, presenting approximately 100 performances. The offerings of the annual outdoor performing arts festival series span all genres and brings renowned artists and rising stars from around the world to local neighborhood parks, presenting distinctly New York genres—salsa, jazz, and hip hop—alongside indie, reggae, Afrobeat, soul, modern dance, and much more in addition to a Family Day event in July.

KAYAKING AT BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK

Searching for something fun an free? A  unique water sport experience? Look no further than the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse! Until the end of August, the Pier 4 beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park offers free kayaking at various times throughout the week. Every Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 7pm, and Saturday from 10am to 3pm, visitors can kayak 20 minutes down the NYC harbor. Boats, paddles, and life vests are all provided free of charge. Every Sunday starting July 11, from noon to 2:30pm, the kayaks will be reserved for kids 7 and up to paddle with a parent

Masks must be worn at all times at the shore, and due to limited space, reservations are required (and may be booked up to two weeks in advance). Easily accessible from Manhattan by Subway or the NYC ferry, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse is the perfect place to cool down on a hot summer day.

THE BUSHWICK OUTDOOR STREET GALLERY

This outdoor street art gallery has gathered quite the social media presence, as it has garnered over 125,000 followers on its Instagram page. Located just off of Flushing Avenue in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick, the project features murals by both local and international artists. While there are many street art walking tours throughout the city, The Bushwick Collective consists of almost 100 blocks of art, and one can easily spend an entire day exploring the creative works that lay here.

The collective’s 10th-anniversary celebration is this August and will include music, food trucks, and local vendors to complement the colorful artwork.

FREE YOGA CLASS AT BRYANT PARK  IS BACK
 Bryant Park’s annual summer yoga series returns. From 6pm to 7pm every Wednesday, yoga enthusiasts can either roll out their mats on the park’s lawn, or follow along at home on the official Instagram page (@bryantparknyc). 

Each week’s class is led by a different instructor, including teachers from the popular studio chain Y7 and the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. All levels of practice are welcome, and in-person participants must bring their own mat and pre-register for the class on the park’s website.
