According to Scanlan and Theoharis (2015), social justice educational leadership must be "holistic." Effective leadership must address multiple aspects of diversity and identity. The following clip demonstrates how many aspects of oppression and identity arise for students in American schools. These young women raise issues of race, class, sexuality, and gender, all through the lens of what is being taught to them in their classrooms.

Educational leaders that focus on social justice must seek to address these multi-faceted issues. Leaders cannot focus on issues of race, gender, or class independently or exclusively, but instead must work to see how each intersects and plays out throughout our educational system.

It is not enough for social justice leaders to identify issues within our current education system, they must also be working towards solutions to these problems. My personal definition of social justice focuses on the ways in which people are actively working to bring about change. If a leader only points out problems and never takes action towards a solution then they are not working for social justice.

Beyond that, social justice leaders must also empower and encourage their students and their communities to take action against situations and systems of injustice. If a leader is uncomfortable with their communities taking action, then they are not working for social justice.

Leaders must be willing to disrupt or transform institutions and power structures that hold certain students back. In order to bring about change, leaders must address the ways in which existing structures contribute to oppression and marginalization of students.

In her article on transformational leadership, Shields (2015) states that successful social justice leaders "focused on deconstructing practices that perpetuate the privilege of some to the exclusion of others while, at the same time, using the power they have to redress inequitable resource distribution." This focus is on reevaluating and disrupting current structures and practices in order to create a more equitable and just experiences.
