I chose San Diego because it is broad! I can say many different things about it! Although I haven't been there for many years, I was born and raised in San Diego. It will always be my community and a perfect example of Social Change.

In San Diego, there is a lot of Latino influence. With Latino influence, the political and social parts of the culture have changed drastically over the years. As politics reign in the country, the community of San Diego has one thing in common and has been using that common factor to stay together and fight together. San Diego’s proximity to the U.S.–Mexico border has made Latino culture an integral part of the city’s environment. Neighborhoods like Barrio Logan stand as cultural and political hubs, where murals in Chicano Park symbolize the struggles and resilience of the Chicano movement. These spaces show how the environment, urban planning, highways, and segregation shaped Latino communities and how those same communities pushed back, reclaiming public space through art, protest, and cultural pride.

This is a picture of a Spanish mission in California. I put this because missions are a stark reminder of the change needed in society and the horrors that were committed in them. They are structures of beauty, but also a reminder to the community to never go back and never do it again. Thus is why I put this as a historical aspect to show how it affects social change. The Spanish missions in San Diego are an important example of how history shapes the community’s experience with social change. The first California mission, Mission San Diego De Acala, was established in 1769 and marked the beginning of European colonization in the region. The missions transformed the social environment by displacing Indigenous Kumeyaay people, restructuring their ways of life, and forcing them into systems of labor and conversion. This history set the stage for patterns of inequality and cultural suppression that continued long after the mission system ended.
