The starting salary for a police officer is around £30,000 per year and will rise every year to a maximum of around £46,000 per year for a more experienced police officer. This job is beneficial as this is a fairly good wage considering that it includes a blue light card, which gets you discount in almost every shop. However, this wage can be considered as 'not enough' considering the danger that police officers are facing in their everyday life. Police officers wages are also paid for by the public in their taxes which is a disadvantage to society.

Detectives typically earn around £33,000 to £51,000 a year. However, this can increase overtime due to experience. Police detectives tend to get free wellbeing services, such as, free physiotherapy, free counselling, and so on. This is a benefit for the salary. On the other hand, some may see the wage as underpayment, however individuals need to realise that the public contribute to their wage through taxes which means society would have financial struggles if the police detective's wage is risen.

Richard Gray was a police officer for West Mercia Constabulary who was shot in the head while on duty in 2007. He was shot after arriving at a scene with a armed response unit, and confronting a gunman at a house where two other officers were being held. This shows us that police officers will put their life on the line to protect the community and really are Heroes.

Weaknesses of a police officer

One weakness of being a police officer is the long, tiring hours. This can really have an impact on the officers as if they work for long hours they become tired which then causes them to make incorrect and irrational decisions. Wrong information can have an impact of a case or crime.

Another weakness is that discrimination can occur. For example, in the United States in 2020, a black man named George Floyd was accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill and then proceeded to be murdered by a white police officer, who had his knee pressed against his neck for over 9 minutes.

Police officers often go above and beyond to help solve cases, For example in Leanne Tiernan's case, the police had to search through 140 different pet shops where they only found the crucial evidence in the 114th shop which finally led them to the killer. This shows they are extremely commited to their roles as if they had not continued they may never have found enough evidence.
