An acid is a chemical substance releases proton or hydrogen (H+) ions (and/or accepts electrons) when placed in water. They are able to react with some metals to produce hydrogen gas. The strength of acids are based on the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution. The more hydrogen ions, the higher the acidity and higher pH level.
Bases are a chemical substance that can accept protons, or another substance that creates (OH-) in a solution. They donate hydroxide (OH-) ions in a solution. Bases react with several fats and oils.
When combined, bases and acids neutralize each other and form salts.

General properties-
bases: bitter in taste, slimy in touch, and often no odor (with the exception of ammonia)
acids: sour in taste, sticky (and sometimes stinging) in touch, and a burning sensation with odor

The word 'acid' came from the Latin word acidus which means sour.

Acids have pH below 7, while bases have pH above 7. When a substance has a neutral pH, they have an equal amount of H+ and OH- ions.
