Learning how the history influences the present is indispensable for adolescents to become mature adults. By studying history, individuals can have well-founded arguments during a discussion if they quote historical facts. An argument that has a fact which supports its point can not be discarded. Another consequence is that the person who learn about history develop a critical sense, being able to define whether if an act can be constructive or destructive for the common good. Analyzing the historical facts and their effects on the world is a decent way to establish a critical sense. And after developing his critical sense, the person who studies history can prevent bad things from happening again, by learning the mistakes of the past generation. For example, Martin Luther King, who changed the world being the leader in the Civil Rights Movement, was inspired by many people who taught him the importance of history, such as Thomas Carlyle and Benjamin Mays.

Question: An increasing number of people are now using the internet to meet new people and socialize. Some people think this has brought people closer together while others think people are becoming more isolated.

Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

It is believed by some that using internet to interact and socialize with other people is making them disconnected from real life. The people who believe in this statement affirm that the internet takes so much of our time that we are not able to have social interactions in the real world. On the other hand there are the group of people who think that internet brings people closer together. According to them, the reason for this is because the internet can break frontiers, and any distance can be reduced to none. Both sides have relevant arguments, but even so the lines of reasoning might converge in some extent.

Those who do not agree with the assumption that people are becoming more isolated because of the internet argue that the technology is just an instrument for communication. And with this instrument they can interact with people they really want to interact with, rather than talk to a person who is next to him by chance. In other words, they say that you should interact whomever is most important for you, no matter where you do that, whether chatting by message or going to a cafe to have a casual conversation. As a result, people can not only communicate to each others without really being at the same place but also reinforce the bonds of those who they truly care for.

On the other hand, the people who believe that internet is making the individuals segregate from the real world claim that technology is gradually destroying our social interactions, to some extent. They point out that, for example, instead of going to the professor’s office to ask any questions, people are spending time sending emails. Also, instead of meeting a friend for a cup of coffee, is more comfortable to text them back and forth from separate homes. Furthermore, this group of people also argue that the quality of those virtual relationships are becoming artificial. For instance, a person who has more than a thousand friends on Facebook clearly barely care for most of them, but still spend time socializing. Consequently, they believe that internet is slowly ruining our social interactions as human beings.

As far as I’m concerned, internet has brought many benefits for communication among people. Everyone can now engage with anyone in the world for a very low cost and with one touch of a button. In addition, people can not only communicate with each others, but also make new friends, by going to a forum that everyone share the same interests, for instance. Besides that, internet communication can also facilitate the treatment of some condition, to some extent. According to a study made by Lindsay H. Shaw and Larry M. Gant, communicating via internet may decrease loneliness and depression significantly. However, nevertheless, all of the new technology somewhat will never replace the human contact. Therefore, those who use internet with moderation is more likely to have a better life.

Even though technology have made our lives easier, we can not live only by interacting via internet. Moreover it is indispensable to certain occasions, such as having a work meeting or a when you need to express some affection for another person. In other words, the communication through the internet is a good thing, as long as the person who use it knows how to balance both, real and virtual lives.

Shaw, Lindsay H., and Larry M.
