Far Eastern University started out as a dream, born virtually out of its founder’s head, Dr. Nicanor Reyes, in 1928 with the help of a reputed group of educators from the Department of Economics in University of the Philippines.
The university practically began life as the Institute of Accountancy that initially offered a three-year program designed to meet the minimum requirements for the certified public accountant examination.
In order to respond to the needs of the times, the Institute soon branched out to other fields of study. A year after, it became the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance (IABF).

In November 1933, FEU became a result of the fusion of Far Eastern College which offered courses in the liberal arts founded in 1919 and the IABF which offered courses in accountancy, economics, business administration, and banking and finance founded in1929.

Being the first president of the university, Dr. Reyes envisioned a school that would promote the teaching of accounting to Filipinos. The 30′s and 40′s became the building years of FEU.

When the Pacific War broke out, the FEU campus became the headquarters of the Kempetai, right in the heart of Manila. Aside from burning and destroying the university records and facilities, the enemy forces also took the life of the great founder and some of his family members.

Though bereft of its founding president, the university reopened in 1945 and ran by eminent educators as presidents-Dr. Hermenigildo Reyes, Jaime Hernandez, Dr. Francisco Dalupan, Clemente Uson, Dr. Leoncio Monson, Belen Enrile-Guitierrez, Dr. Vidal Tan, Dr. Teodoro Evangelista and the founder’s eldest son, Dr. Nicanor Reyes, Jr.
After embarking on a massive expansion program of physical plant and facilities to accommodate its growing student population and to cope with the demands of modern, relevant education for a developing country during the post-liberation years, FEU also geared towards elevating the level of academic excellence by advanced instruction and professional training to qualified students by establishing the Institute of Graduate Studies.

Various curricula were also reviewed which paved the way for new academic programs. According to former FEU president Lydia Echauz, DBA, the university is a premiere university in the country. It is a university of choice among high school graduates because FEU has had long and rich history in education, culture, arts and sports, she enthuses.

In addition to academic excellence, the university strives to impart a well-rounded education by providing alternatives to students. And with the pronounced effort to upgrade the faculty, the research program, and the physical plant, the university climbs further towards quality education.

For the past years since its founding, FEU has produced business tycoons, ambassadors, justices of Supreme Court and other judicial bodies, technocrats in private and government sectors, finance wizards, acclaimed physicians, nurses, educators, theater and media luminaries and so many others in different fields of expertise.

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) is the oldest existing university in Asia founded on April 28, 1611.

The institution was established through the initiative of Miguel de Benavides, the third Archbishop of Manila. In 1605, he bequeathed a modest amount from his personal funds for the establishment of a seminary-college to prepare young men for the priesthood. Those funds and his personal library became the nucleus of the University of Santo Tomas, which was founded in 1611.

UST was first called the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario, and was later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas, in honor of the foremost Dominican theologian, Thomas Aquinas. The original campus was located in Intramuros, the walled city of Manila.

In 1624, the Colegio was authorised by the King of Spain to confer academic degrees in theology, philosophy, and the arts. In 1645, Pope Innocent X elevated the college to a university.

In 1680, it was subsequently placed under the royal patronage of the Spanish monarchy. It was King Charles III of Spain who granted it the title of “Royal University” in 1785, for its exceptional loyalty in defending Manila against the British invasion. In 1902, Pope Leo XIII declared the University of Santo Tomas a Pontifical University, and in 1947, Pope Pius XII bestowed upon it the title of The Catholic University of the Philippines.

In 1911, the university campus transferred from Intramuros to its present site, which covers a total of 21.5 hectares in the Sampaloc district.

In terms of student population, it is the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus. Since its establishment in 1611, the university academic life was disrupted only on two occasions: the first was from 1898 to 1899, due to the Philippine revolution against Spain; and the second time was from 1942 to 1945, when the Japanese Occupation Forces converted the UST Main building into an internment camp during the Second World War.

Today, UST’s commitment to spreading the light to the youth, through education and evangelisation, has garnered reaffirmation through the recognitions it has received both in the national and international scene.

The similarities between our former schools were, it all provided extra curricular activities and imposed strict rules/discipline measures. Thus it influenced us in a way of being disciplined and active students. Each school also gives importance to virtue and excellence that is why we also acquired it by being responsible and righteous students. While for our current school, it is actually almost the same with our past schools. The University also influenced us mostly with our attitudes, behaviors, and understanding. Since the University’s mission is to nurture innovative teachers, this affects the way we think, we as students have become more creative and competitive with all the things we are doing especially when it comes to teaching. While for the behaviors and beliefs, the University enlightened us and influenced us to be always understanding, inclusive, sensitive, and to have fair judgement.
