"But soft! What light through yonder window breaks!

It is the east, and Juliet is the sun!"(II ii 2-3)

Context: After the feast, Romeo breaks into the Capulet orchard, and watches Juliet at her window.

Literary Device and Significance: Romeo uses a metaphor to compare Juliet to the sun. The development of the light/darkness motif reveals that he feels she is bright, beautiful, and life-giving. Romeo's extreme comparison reveals his romantic and impulsive character. Her love has transformed his darkness into light.

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet"(II ii 43-44).

Context: After the feast, Juliet is speaking to herself on the balcony about her love for Romeo, and her frustration about the family feud.

Literary Device and Significance: Juliet uses a metaphor to compare the nonsensical and puzzling nature of names and identity. She reveals a character change, as she starts to question her family's decisions. This emphasizes the message that people can allow hatred to destroy relationships, without a rational cause.

(II ii 55-57)

Context: Romeo begins speaking to Juliet while she is on her balcony, she asks who is there and he replied that his name is hateful to himself because he carries the name of her family's enemy.

Literary Device and Significance: The literary device used is hyperbole as he is over exaggerating

the hate for his name.

"As that vast shore washed with the farthest sea/I should adventure for such merchandise."

Context: Romeo is underneath Juliet's balcony. Juliet asks him how he got there; Romeo replies that he just needed the power of love. It is not a real response. He sort of just avoids the question.

Literary Device + Significance: Romeo is comparing his love to a boat on stormy seas, and that he would be willing to go through ridiculous hardships just to earn Juliet's love. It shows that he's being rather hasty in his declarations of love towards Juliet, and that he would be reckless just to get with her. He also shows that he's rather passionate by pledging his unconditional devotion.

This quote shows that Juliet loves romeo a lot and is using words to express her love in depth.
