Edmund Ignatius Rice, born into a farming family under the shadow of penal laws on the first of June 1762 at Westcourt, Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland. He was a roman catholic missionary dedicated to god and his preachings. Edmund attended the commercial academy in Kilkenny alongside his siblings for two years before receiving an elementary education at a local school (hedge school in Callan). When Edmund was 17 when he was recruited as a worker for his uncle in Waterford City. By his late twenties, using his entrepreneurial skills, he had earned enough money to suffice for himself and his family. Edmund married a Waterford businessman's daughter, Mary Elliot. After a tragic birth to their disabled daughter also named Mary, Mother Mary died due to shock which left Edmund devasted. After many months of grieving over his wife Edmund Ignatius Rice founded and opened a brotherhood known as the Christian brothers. Soon later he became an educationalist and opened more schools including the current day school Saint Pats established in 1952 and currently supports approximately 1340 students.

Biblical criticism -World in front of the text

This parable had a critical message for Edmund Rice as it influenced his decision to found and open the Christian Brothers. These brothers then started many foundations and schools including the Christian Brothers foundation and current schools, Saint Josephs and Saint Pats. I think the author wrote this story to encourage others to be helpful and willing to those in need. Representing the Samaritan in the story from today's world would be Pope Francis. Pope Francis said on July 10th, 2016 states “The Good Samaritan indicates a lifestyle, the center of which is not ourselves, but others, with their difficulties, who we meet on our path and who challenge us”. The parable of the Good Samaritan isn’t just a nice passage to reflect on but signifies a concrete choice we make in deciding how to live and treat those around us. Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic Church inspiring thousands worldwide to do good and avoid evil while also walking in the footsteps of Jesus. A target audience for this text would be all Catholics as it is representing a way that we should treat all people in life and treat everyone as equals despite and illnesses or deficiencies. This parable story would have inspired Edmund Ignatius Rice to help those in need and giving a place for the less fortunate to eat, sleep, take shelter and be looked after by creating the Christian Brothers.

This passage is a parable of the good Samaritan helping an injured man who is ignored by others due to his injuries. As a man was walking on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho, he fell into the hands of robbers who stripped him, beat him and walked away leaving him slowly dying int he middle of the road. By chance a priest was going down the road and when he noticed the man injured in the middle of one road he crossed to another road to avoid the man. Similarly to the priest, a Levite also passed the injured man but without stopping he continued his journey down the road. Fortunately, a samaritan traveling down the same road came near the man and when he saw his injuries he was moved with pity. Pouring oil and wine on his wounds the Samaritan began to bandage him. Lifting the man onto his own animal the Samaritan took him to an inn and looked after him. The next day the Samaritan gave the innkeeper to denarii and told him to take care of the man. He then said he would pay the innkeeper for any other expenses. In this parable the author (Luke) wanted us to know how Jesus inspired others to do good even if they are carrying illness or disease. This became a chain reaction and is still being carried on in today's society.

The Good Samaritan was written for a gentile audience by Luke who is one of the four gospel writers in the bible. The setting of this story took place on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho which is located in Israel, northwest of the Dead Sea. The landscape was like a desert with minimal to no wetland. It was consumed by hills, rocks, and dry land. During the time of this parable, good health was viewed as a reward for righteous living. Having a mental disability such as illness, blindness or hearing impairment was not seen as a punishment as much as a form of being lesser of the good health society. The strongest healing belief of this time was through the touch of Jesus. From the lack of knowledge and technology the only cure for a disease or impairment was through Jesus and his so-called 'touch of power'. It was uncommon for the society of the time to hear of anyone coming in contact with a man or women carrying an illness, hence why Jesus was considered as an important person. Around this time of living due to religious reasons, you were not by rights allowed to touch a person with an illness. Jesus goes against his own religious beliefs to help and heal everyone he passes with a disease or other medical illness. In this story when the Samaritan (follower of Jesus) crosses paths with the injured man lying on the ground, he goes out of his way to help the man and take him to an inn to be looked after and cared for.

After finding his congregation, he encourgaed the brothers to take part in the daily mass.

Praying
Praying was a common spiritual practice performed by Edmund Rice as it signified his holiness and bond to religion while also thanking God for his blessings in life. Edmund often prayed for his wife and daughter that they were safe and be treated well in heaven. Edmund used his prayers to come to peace with the sudden death of his wife and daughter by accepting what had happened and understanding why it happened.

There are multiple messages/writings that were written by Edmund Rice still being used in current day. One of these messages was by Edmund Rice to Bryan Bolgar in 1810. The message said “One thing you can be sure of: that whilst you work for God, whether you succeed or not, he will amply reward you”.

Edmund wrote another letter was written to Brother Edward Patrick O’Flaherty, in approximately 1837. “Have courage, the good seed will grow up in the children's hearts later on.”

The main message behind Edmund rice’s writings was to continue the message of God. Edmund used the message as a way of saying that the young children he taught would use their education to spread good to the world and avoid evil. As they follow in the footsteps of Jesus and God and continuing their message, they will be rewarded with great potential to make a difference. Edmunds impact of his writings is represented symbolically to acknowledge the blessings we receive and gain out of life.

The Rerum Novarum is an encyclical written by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 expressing the purpose of changing the working and living conditions of the so-called newly introduced way of life. The industrial revolution taking place in the 18th century was the time in which this encyclical was written. It was an open letter, passed to all Catholic patriarchs, primates, archbishops and bishops, that addressed the condition of the working classes. The Rerum Novarum at one point states ‘The richer class have many ways of shielding themselves, and stand less in need of help from the State; Whereas the mass of the poor have no resources of their own to fall back upon, and must chiefly depend upon the State.’ In simple terms, this means that the richer class does not obtain help from anyone and they protect themselves from the lower class citizens. Although they have more than enough money and riches to sustain not only themselves but others including the less fortunate, they choose to selfishly keep their money and waste it on unnecessary resources. This leaves a wide range of lower class citizens with little to no food, education or essential resources. This statement in the Rerum Novarum encyclical links back to the work of Edmund Rice by money whoever they doffer in that Edmund sold his late uncles business and spent that money on schools to provide education to those who need it. These school continued the work of Jesus as well as Edmund Rice and his brotherhood creating a better world for us present.

Through the work of Edmunds Rice, there were multiple great traits portrayed through Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly roles. He acted out his Priestly roles by praying daily to God, Worshiping to the teachings of God and attending mass daily. Edmund also showed priestly traits through his decision to found and open a school providing education to young boys in poverty. By giving up his uncles business to begin his first school he risked his own future of having the ability to have a long term job that could support him and his family.

Edmund showed his Prophetic roles by giving himself the capability to continue establishing schools and by showing his love for the Catholic religion and to the world for children in poverty. Stating many times that it is not acceptable for young boys and girls living in poverty to work in such awful conditions. Sooner rather then later, Edmund was forced to accept the fact that he couldn't help everyone but those he did help made a difference.

While showing his traits for both priestly and prophetic roles Edmund Rice also obtained kingly roles. using his genuine power made through his brotherhood, his education in the name of Jesus and God as well as his good initiative to help those in need, He secured the future of many youch men through their belief in God to do well and achieve high as Edmund always had faith in his commonly used quote 'the good seed will grow in the heart of a young child.

21st Century groups that continue the work of Edmund Rice

After the death of Edmund Rice in 1844 his mission was still being told and carried on through his ongoing brotherhood and all Catholic individuals. As a unit, all Catholics continue to spread the word of Edmund Rice as they live partly through his work and teachings. We as a society still use the three prophetic, priestly and kingly roles in many ways. These include volunteering at shelters, involving ourselves in mass, praying to God, worship of the Catholic church, helping out anyone in need and most importantly giving second chances when necessary. We are known as the modern day good samaritans and ongoing generations of Edmund Rice. A specific group that is technically "qualified" as a Catholic group is the Edmund Rice brothers. They are continuing Edmunds work worldwide and preaching the gospel to all Catholics and all those who are poor, in poverty or even disease carriers.
